Water pump Needs to be replaced help!!

I have an 04 LB7 with 165,000 mi on it and just the other day my dash said I had low coolant. After checking it out I found the water pump seemed to be leaking.. leaking I mean there was orange crust on the bottom and looked as if the coolant had run down some of the hoses. The shop wants about $1000 but I am half tempted to do it my self. Any thing in particular that I need to be careful of or need to do before I start. Also what brand water pump is the best for these trucks and about what price ranges should I be looking at for the water pump its self. Thanks for your help guys

I paid a shop 400 to do mine. That's parts included.

The hardest part about changing the pump-- is removing the balancer -- and then retorquing it to 265 lb ft. Leslie makes a flywheel tool and special 36 mm 12 point balancer bolt socket to help-- and you need a 3/4 breaker bar and an energy drink.

There is also a lot of parts to remove and reinstall.

You got a deal. An OEM pump is going to run you $170-200 and the shaft should be welded. I got mine for Merchant with the shaft welded for like $170 I think.

I haven't heard of a balancer? is that on the fan I am guessing? So that needs to be torqued to 265lbs? I know you have to take off the starter and put a socket or something to keep the flywheel from spinning is that to take off the fan and all?

Balancer is on crankshaft, u have to remove it because one of the water pump bolts is behind it

I didn't remove starter when I did mine

No need to remove the starter if you get the Lilse tool. I ordered my pump from Merchant as well as the tool. Best price around!! And the customer service is bar none. Technical support is the owner, Eric Merchant. Can't beat that.

So I have been doing some reading up on this. Did yall have issues with head gaskets blowing after you replaced your water pump? How bad is it to drive around with a water pump that is leaking? One more question and Im done is there a good place to go to read up on directions on how to replace the water pump your self. Sorry for all the questions Im trying to save money and don't want to pay the dealer a lot of money!
