| 8.1 Vortec to LB7 Swap: What's it gonna take? I have 120k on the clock on my '01 2500hd. I just recent spent about $1500 bucks in repairs and new tires. I really like my truck. I'm intrigued by a diesel though. I know that I want to get a diesel in the future and/or swap one into my pickup. My truck isn't worth much ($9k). I was looking around, and I can get a used duramax with around 120k miles for about $5k. Besides the engine, what else do I need to do the swap. I have looked around, and I know what you're probably going to say - that it's cheaper to just buy a duramax. If I can find one with this low of miles and do the swap myself, then it probably wouldn't be cheaper. What do you think I need to do to swap it in?

| Soo... aafter doing some research I heard that if I get hold of a donor, I could take out all necessary components out of it. If I get the lb7 mounts I could bolt that in. I also heard that the wiring harness would plug up to any 2500hd wiring components in the cab. Thoughts?

| Sounds like a lot of work and trouble if you ask me. A lot easier to sell your current one and find a Duramax.

| Trade in the current one and buy a duramax. You can get an lb7 for 8-15k where I live.

| Yeah, I think you're right. I don't know if I want an LB7 because of injectors or hold off a few years and get the LLY or LBZ I really want

| I would swap an lbz in if I were going that far..the lb7's will cost more than 5k later when the injectors take a dump(assuming they haven't already)

| I kinda like the 8.1 in my work truck. Of course i don't have to pay for the gas! OP, does your 8.1 consume alot of oil? Most in our fleet use alot.
