Cracked head

Hello, this is my first, but I've been hiding in the shadow for a couple weeks now. I've been digging through the archives to give myself a heads up before tackling this project.

Anyways, I bought an 01 lb7 with 186,000 miles that was blowing white smoke and little bubbles forming in the overflow tank (it gets worse when warmed up). If there is coolant in the oil it's not obvious. The previous owner gave up after putting head gaskets on it and still had the same problem.

I pulled out all the glow plugs and pressure tested it. Coolant came out of the # 3 glow plug hole after 20-30 minutes. Then I removed the injector cup, cleaned off all the old lock tite very well, put lock tite on, instantly reinstalled cup, waited 32 hrs, filled with coolant, pressure tested and coolant came out the # 3 glow plug hole again after 20-30 minutes.

I pulled off the head and the gasket, the head and block showed no obvious traces of a coolant to cylinder leak. When looked at the head closer this is what I found..............

Does this look like a crack? Has anyone ever seen this before? It looks like a crack consisting of pin holes. I'm going to try and get a magnifying glass tomorrow, to get a better look.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to explain it correctly.

Have the head fluxed. That will tell if there is a crack there.

Look how clean the head is on that cylinder, compared with the other cylinders-- looks like it was steamed cleaned-- because it was. You need a new head.

I actually cleaned the head up with a non scratch scotch brite pad to get a better look at the crack/corrosion. I dropped it off at the machine shop to have it pressure tested, hopefully I'll know tomorrow. I'm probably going to get a new head either way, but I would feel alot better knowing it was bad for sure.

If you do get a new/used head, just make sure it matches your other head. LB7's had two different types heads depending on whether they were california emissions or federal emissions.
