I'm sure it's possible, but would be a lot more difficult. It's only held on by the X member and 6 nuts.

Yeah I know but I'm an Old fart and do not feel like lifting my transfer case out and back in I figured I could just drop the driveshaft and take off the back of the case and get after it

Im not quite sure you can get the case split in half on the truck. Not sure how accessible the internal snap ring is on the truck

If you can remove the body it's doable in the truck :P

The rear case snap ring is on the top of the rear half of the case, can't get to it with the case still installed. Also, even if you were able to find a way to get that off, the torsion bar crossmember is in the way also and would have to be removed. Much easier to remove the transfer case.

I will say that if you just *happen* to have the body off for another reason, it's a breeze to do it in the truck

Do these TCs use a vc or pc or a planetary gear system? I am very familiar with rebuilding the NP249/242/247 for my jeeps but new to these tcs. What models are these?
