I have an 2002 with 144,000 miles. This week I started experencing the same issues. Extremely long crank time prior to starting. Once running is fine. Were you able to find out what was going on with your truck?
I understand that part...i was just wondering if there are any spots that rub or...
There is problems with them leaking at the connector where the wire goes in up top, and with the WIF's leaking- there's 2 good spots to check. If you can get someone to help you, pressurize the system (10 pounds max IIRC) through the filler neck and see if you can get it to leak..

With my recent no start experience behind me I recommend using the fuel fitting by the alternator instead of the plug on the filter housing. I used a 1/2" i.d. vinyl hose over the fitting and inserted a straightened out coat hanger down the hose to push on the Schrader valve. With the big hose it's far easier to see if there are any bubbles. You'll know you've got all the air out if the primer is to hard to push without going 1/2 a stroke.
I experienced a issue over the summer with the WIF leaking fuel even when closed off out of the pitcock. I have a put a new one on the truck and really hadn't had any problems until the last few weeks. A friend of mine said that the new low sulfur fuel could be part of the problem as it deteriorates the o-rings. How did you resolve your starting problem?
my problem, as described in the thread, was the heater connection on the top of the filter housing leaking. It would leak out fuel when priming with the plug in and, I assume, allow air to draw in when trying to start the truck. I have effected a repair using epoxy at the base of the fitting.
Update. Taking all of the different possible problems, I started with changing the filter, replacing all o-ring and also replacing the screw that allows you to purge the filter of air. I did this yesterday and as of this morning, the truck is now starting with only a few cranks of the engine. Thanks to everyone for all of your input and suggestions.
WIF stands for water in fuel. It is a sensor at the bottom of your fuel filter. It is threaded in and has a petcock to drain water out the bottom of the filter.
