Starts and shuts off

Hey, i'm new to the forum and i have an 03 duramax. I have a quick question for you guys. If you could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. On cold mornings when i crank my truck, it runs for a few seconds and then it just cuts off. The only way it will start back up is if i prime the fuel filter. I have not plugged the truck in yet, because i just found the block heater plug in. I'm going to try to plug it in tonight and see if that helps. But if anybody has had this problem before and/or has any information on why my truck is doing this i would really appreciate it if you could help me out. Thanks alot.

Welcome to the forum!

The fuel filter housing's (where the primer is) are known to leak. Im guessing the rubber seals are brittle and starting to leak letting air in. It starts for a second because there is some fuel left over in the injectors and injection pump.

I have been having the same problem. Not just on cold days. are the seals replaceable or do you have to replace the whole housing? Are there any check valves?

first things first i would remove the filter and check the o-rings that go with it....cheaper/easier then playing with the housing at first

I just recently purchased my 03 from a friend and he was telling me something about this. he said that when its cold out it will start and run for a bit then shut off. He has had it since new and has taken it to the dealer several times because this has happened since he got it new and the dealer never could figure out anything. Then turns out this only happens when there is less than a 1/3 tank of fuel. His advice to me was just keep plenty of fuel in the tank and i wouldn't have a problem. But i also would like to know what the deal is concerning this.

Chris

amount of fuel in the take should have nothing to do with prime...

I had a similar problem and found the filter housing leaking at the heater connection. Here's the link to the thread:

^^^^^Try this first ..Same thing happened to me and it was repair shop in OKC over tightened the filter leaving a hair line crack in the housing. Which they denied doing of course. I think it cost me around $700 or so for the new housing.

It all boils down to checking for leaks guys- if you are losing prime, plugging in the truck isn't going to do anything for it. Need to find out where the leak is- look the system over good, and if that doesn't reveal anything, try to pressurize the system through the fill neck and see if it will produce a leak...
