u joints??

heres my problem. when i put my truck into drive from park, or reverse to drive ( basically when i shift in or out of gear) i get a popping noise. its slowly getting worse. i also get a squeaking noise during acceleration. i think it might be the u joint squeaking, but i cant pin point the popping noise. it is also doing it when accelerating or decelerating. sounds like its coming from the front and rear of the drive shaft. any help would be great. thanks

Well first of all your u joints could be drying up. Check on them so see if there is a grease nipple to grease them. I know mine don't and i dont think they do until you replace them and the new ones do. Second its hard to find which u joint is squeeking but the clunking noise should be easy to find if you just grab your drive shaft right near one of the u joints and try moving it up and down. there should be no play also try turning it it will turn a little bit but what you have to watch for is that both shafts are turning your drive shaft and your intake shaft you should not have play in the actual ujoint. do this to all your ujoints and hopefully you find the one with play in it! Good luck let me know how you make out!

Try checking your cv joints in the front end. Usually you notice them more when your turning they will clunk but its worth a try also check your 4x4 drive shaft

The ujoint may not havr play in it but if you take your drive shaft off you can inspect each cap of the ujoint. Mine had a squeak, could not feel movement, so i took the drive shaft off and one of the caps fell of to expose the rusted and ground up needle bearings . Also i wouldn't get a u joint with a zerk in it as they are hollowed out for the grease to flow (less strength).

Mine was popping under take off and there was no play at all in them. I took the old ones out and they were in really bad shape. Put in new ones and its quiet and smooth...

Im having a similar problem. I hear a clanking on bumps, some shifts, and especially after letting off the gas if I spool up the motor without breaking the tires loose. What is it????????
