I have a 04 Duramax (early model motor) and the glow plugs are going out. The dealer wants 500.00 to replace them. Are they hard to replace or is it worth the money to have the dealer replace them. I'm always up for a challenge, but I don't want to get in over my head.
Changing a glow plug is the same as changing a spark plug. Theres a wire on it that you have to remove then use a socket unthread it then put it back in.
There are also 3 different glow plugs. One for the LB7, LLY, LBZ. There all slightly different so that they wont get confused.
Id say as long as you can see the glow plugs you should be able to change them. IT takes about 10 minutes to remove the inner fender. That might help out in the long run.

Just wondering how to tell when a plug is bad? My 04 lly is not starting good as of late and my glo plug light is staying on to long about 20 sec compared to about 3 when new.
Was that $500 to change all or just the bad ones?? They say they are easy, but if you snap one off in the head then it becomes a real pain in the a@#.. I found the for a set priced at $190.00, but I do not want to pull the head either.. Make sure you soak the living piss out of those little bastards with PB Blaster for a couple of days before you put a wrench on them...

I have over 200,000 on my 02 GMC and now with all this discussion, I'm wondering at what mileage you should consider replacing them. Also, where are they? Do you need to pull the injectors and the covers? Thanks,
ya how can you really tell if they are going out or not....on my 6.5 the light stays on for 10 sec... like it should..... but everybody keeps telln me that they are going out..... any noises or anything that would let me know...... thnks

I was wondering the same thing. When I asked the dealer, he told me that the computer on board will let you know when any plug begins to fail. There will be a specific code thrown up and you can trace from there. Un like older diesels, the new computer monitors your system and there is no suggested lileage to simply change them out. I think that's a good thing???
Ok, the dealer tells me that #1 & #4 plugs are bad. They want $240 to replace the two. Does anyone out there know exactly where these little buggers are, and what sateps are taken to remove them. Is there a crap load of other stuff that must come off first? They are only $17.00 at the parts house. The dealer is charging an hour labor for each??? Help!!!
