FYI not trying to be arogant but you guys have it easy most of you are posting from southern areas... its not uncommon for me to be in North West Territories north of Inuvik look on a map where that is my old truck the temp in the mirror for most of January and February would just read O-R
Yea I know what your talking about, I have flown out to Canada several times. Go with the high idle, seems to be the most senceable alternative.

-30!!! Wow, that's pretty COLD!

I'm new to the Duramaxes, but I had an F250 Powerstroke. When the oil temp got too low, the engine would automatically kick into high idle. Do Duramaxes do this, too?

i guess having a remote start with timer on it is out of the question? My remote start i can have it start every 3 hours, which works and i have never had a problem with that. If you do leave it run though, definately use the high idle. My truck only gets EGTs of about 180 at -30F or colder...with high idle it gets about 215. If u just have regular idle on it will eventually wash down the walls of the cylinders.

sorry i'm new to diesels always had gas and was never an issue to just let it idle but what do you mean by "wash down the walls of the cylinder"?

Diesels don't run as hot as gas motors do. If you idle normally the engine won't make enough heat in cold weather. Eventually fuel will "wash" (bypass the rings and move to the oil pan). High idle allows the engine to heat more so this doesn't happen as easily. Go with high idle. Should be able to turn on via steering wheels controls. Can on mine anyway. High idles until certain engine temp is reached and will maintain it.

lbz's automatically idle up in cold weather. he has lb7 so he had to do the whole mod with the cruise control i believe. High idle also will raise oil pressure and help lubricate everything better since your not driving.

Man that must cost alot for fuel I get that weather and yea i leave my truck running when im shopping or something but never over night. I like the remote start idea though where it will start every 3 hours also duramax's are the best for starting in cold weather mine has no problem starting in -35 from sitting all night. Its hard on it probably but it starts no problem

It will get to -60 below wind chill temps here in South Dakota. I just plan on having my winter front on of course and also leaving it plugged in. I also run Stanadyne Performance formula every tank

Higher Idle is a must. Along with the increased oil pressure and heat, it will also blow out the carbon that will collect on the top ring keeping it from glazing and eventually scratching the sleeve. I've run trucks that haven't been shut down except to change the oil, watch your engine hrs., you'll want to change your fluids according to the clock versus the odometer.
