Dual Mass Flywheel

I know this has been cussed and discussed, but my 03 is coming up on 5 years. I know the flywheel is out of it by the noise and vibration, but I have been putting off fixing it.
The truck is slightly under 5 years old and has 82000 miles on it.. I just stumbled across information in my warranty book that makes it sound like the flywheel is still under warranty. Can you guys verify it? Also should they replace the clutch and throwout bearing. Has anyone had experience with this one. I have been to the shop to get a price on this almost 6 months ago, but no one stepped up to offer warranty work on it at that time. Should they stand behind it, this is really a lightly used truck with minimal heavy use time...

The flywheel is covered 5 years 100,000 miles with a $100 deductable. The clutch is not covered under this because it is a wear and tear item like brakes.

i just did this. i replaced the throw out bearing and clutch, and they paid for the labor. it cost me $640, 218.15 for cylinder, and 422.56 for the plate.

Sit down with the dealer service manager and higher if you need too. I went through this a few times and ended up fixing it myself later because GM essentially lied to me.

Here is what the solution is. Buy a southbend single mass flywheel and clutch kit. See if the dealership will pay for part of it and do all of the install. Then your problems will be solved.

I was told after the 2nd flywheel in warranty that the flywheel was "new and improved" I spoke to a person at LUK that makes the dual mass deal for GM and he said there was no new upgraded flywheel and that he was unaware of any problems to the flywheels except for modified ones. (which is a real load of you know what) so if you allow GM to do this, you will end up doing it again soon.

I also spoke with an engineer at ZF transmissions. he said ther is no problems with going to a single mass flywheel as far as the trans is concerned.

I noted on my kit from southbend that the flywheel and the clutch disc are different, but the pressure plate is the same one as factory.

GM really screwed truck owners on this one, so make them prove to you that they have fixed the problem before they stick you with the same junk.

I have 68,000 on the southbend clutch. It was just as smooth and quiet as the dual mass when it functioned. No problems at all. Jim

I just talked to the dealer about my flywheel cuse it has been replaced under there noise/vibration bulletin at 30,000 and they said it had a 1year warranty on the replacement now at 63,000 mine has the hard peddle/slipping problem that i read on hear is from the dual mass/disk? misalignment mine is an 02 crew cab dually 4x4 most of my miles have been with a camper/trailer or with a 9000 to 12000 # trailer

Dual Mass flywheels are a joke. What moron decided that was a good idea for a truck needs to be drug out back and beaten. I like jimschaechter's idea. South Bend has the BEST clutches available. If you can work it out with them to do that for you, you will be much better off it the long run.

i agree they do make the best clutches, i've had several customers have GM do the install under warranty, some have even had the dealer replace their stock dmf 3x already.
