| i just got back from an 7700km (4000mile) road trip and right in the middle of it i lost 8 quarts of fluid while on the highway. we were going about 110km/h (70mph) for about 4 hours straight. it was about 34ºC (mid 90's) out. the truck wasn't making any weird noises, the tranny wasn't overheating according to the gauges. the aux fan came on a couple times but i didnt think anything of it because of how hot it was outside. then as soon as we got off the highway and the tranny downshifted, the computer wouldnt engage the D(rive) gear range and i could only select gears individually after coming to a stop. i got it off the highway and got underneath it and the fluid was everywhere, even dripping off the hitch. at first i though though the fluid foamed and overflowed through the breather vent, but it was pretty dirty and i thought it might have blown out the filler tube seal, but i didnt quite understand how the fluid got as far forward as the tranny/engine gasket. i topped it up with fluid and some high mileage tranny additive with a sealer. it was hardly leaking anymore. the engine light went off , so i drove it for a couple days around town, but once i got it back out on the highway it was gushing out worse than when it originally broke down. i finally took it in to a dealership (didnt know a shop i could trust 3600km from home) and the tech thought it might have been a torn seal till he took it all apart and ran dye through the torque converter, sure enough there was a microscopic crack in one of the welds where it was draining through. $2200 (installed) later i was back on the road without a drip in sight.
i hope it wasnt my roadtrip that caused the crack
