Water pump noise (whine)

I installed a GM oem water pump on my 2002 lb7 and it makes a whinning noise now. I have about a 1000 miles on it now and has not changed. Should I replace it with another one? It has a 12 month warrenty. If I keep running it will it cause any damage? It makes a similer sound as a power steering pump going out.

Curious about this...Sounds like what mine is doing but only from time to time at about 11-1400 rpm.....Have extended powertrain warranty through GM and I am going to have to get it in to see if in fact its the water pump going. Replaced both idlers and tensioner...that would have been a cheap fix but not to be.

Just changed mine, it did it too. 2500 miles later, its gone. Might be slight difference in gears, and its wearing off. Definitely check your oil if its the case.... any metal shaving are gonna wind up in windage or filter.

So maybe I should put a few more miles on it before swapping it out?

Your call. I put a lot of miles on, so it didn't take long to put that on mine and its quiet now. Was real noticeable at first, can't hear it at all now. Changed my oil shortly after, and letting it run from there.
