Replacing just the spin-on filter is done by some on every Engine Oil change, when under extreme use, then only enough ATF fluid to top off.

Like any Automatic transmission, a large percent of total fluid is retained in the Torque Converter when the pan is emptied, removed, cleaned, and replaced with a new filter.

This will require 10-10.5 quarts in replacement fluid. The total system, including the TC is 22 quarts.

While you never get all of the old fluid, the trick is to change early, before deterioration of the old fluid. Some manufacturers don’t recommend a full fluid change.

They’ve seen problems occur in cases of poor maintenance, when new fluid is introduced, the sudden increased bite damaging internal parts. This is true with GM when servicing the 4L80e on the 6.0L gassers.
