check engine light and transmission not shifting

I was driving today and the check engine light came on and it wont shift past 2nd or 3rd gear (i can't remember which)
Is there a way I can check the check engine code without a scanner? On my jeep it's a series of key on and off which pop the codes up on the dash, is that possible with this truck? (01)
Would I be able to reset it by disconnecting the battery for a few min?

The shifting feels fine, but then it won't go to the next gear. Starting from a stop is normal, no hard shift to second, no delay going into drive or reverse. I'm really hoping its some computer issue, because I HAVE to drive 180 miles home sunday morning, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

There is no way to read the codes without a scanner. Some codes will clear if you disconnect the batteries for 15-20 minutes, but if the problem is still there, it will go "Limp" again.

Drive to an auto parts store and have them check the codes-- write them down before they are cleared. (Some places will only read codes-- not erase them, because of liability)

Might be time to purchase a code reader, then you would be able to read, and clear codes yourself.

You probably can't read any codes because the unit many not be communicating with the transmission control module (TCM). You will likely discover a P0700 in the ECM, but the TCM will contain the transmission code. My guess is the TCM has a problem upshifting into one of the higher gears so it is inhibiting the shifts. The TCM will only allow what is knows is right, and will inhibit shifting to prevent damage. It sounds like it is time to pay some diagnostic fees to a trans shop or dealer. I would recommend finding someone who has experience with Allison, otherwise they might do some guessing.

mine did the same thing about 30minutes ago..i did manage to get my hypertech to communicate (after 4 tries) cleared all 4 codes and drove it a few miles down the road it worked fine...Was told that the hypertech tuners were JUNK! wish i had known that before i bought it. If something happens again i`m sending it back to hypertech and get my money back....scott

does the dtc port have power? check the cigarette lighter, if no power replace the fuse (a blue 15a micro style) in the panel in the engine bay...
