thought it was injectors

my dad owns a 2003 gmc sierra 2500HD with the LB7. the truck is bone stock; never been chipped or programed. the other day on his way to work he felt a slight vibration while accelerating to highway speed and noticed a cloud of blue smoke. needless to say he put the truck in neutral and slowed to a stop on the side of the road. after inspecting under the hood and noticed nothing out of the ordinary (just the engine running rough) he continued his way to work. we had the truck toed to a gm dealer suspecting it was the injectors causing this problem. the truck was 30 days out of warranty too when all this happened so he was quoted 5100 dollars for the repairs. the mechanic started tearing the motor apart to do the repairs when he noticed one of the valves was missing. upon removing the cylinder head this is what we found. has anyone heard of this happening? it just seems weird to me that an engine could fail like this for no apparent reason.

also too never was any knocking, banging or any other noises noted before or during, just a vibration in the truck and the engine idling rough.

holy $#!%. Looks like the piston didnt like its home any more! where did it go? could of had an injector failure causing cylinder temps to skyrocket by the looks of the head, looks melted.

Welcome to the Forum!

Wow Id say that is certlainley a little far from being a injector! I cant beleave that I have seen that happen on gasers but never a diesel. Especially one thats stock! The scary thing is what made it do that? Id definatly call GM and complain to tray and get part of it paid for. What year was the truck and how many miles?

You need to get ahold of one of the members here. He is in the process of dealing with a bad motor.

well we suspect the damage to the head is not from heat like you suggest. i think it is from the piston pounding the broken valves into the head. then finally the piston broke apart and is now resting in pieces in the oil pan.

the engine is scrap metal.

How many miles???? What does the headgasket look like???? I have seen damage like this done by starting fluid and a coolant leak......Were the valves ever adjusted??? Did the injector come out in one piece???

140 000 km (about 90 000 miles) the headgasket looked good. valves have never been adjusted. and yes the injectors all came out in one piece.
