hard starting in cold weather

Hi Guys, I noticed with my 02 lb7 that it starts hard at about 10 above if it sits all night, last year it started good all the time down to -10 below. It just turnes over and over and over. If I park the truck in the garage at night it is about 20 degrees in there it starts right up. I even put the light weight oil in it this year to see if it would help. When the truck starts it sounds like a old diesel tractor starting on only a couple cylinders then it revs up and smoothens right out. I put a new wix fuel filter on it too, no check engine light is on eather... what do you guys think???? Thanks

balance rates are good on the injectors, I am thinking if is somthing with the glowplugs, any ideas where to start? no codes are showing, thanks

have you thought about plugging in the block heater?
if not, try this, turn key on til glow plug light goes out. turn it off and back to on again, til it goes out again, and repeat once more, then start it. if you do not plug it in.

I have been running power service additive, I also cycled the key 3 or 4 times, If i plug it in it starts fine, but if i leave it sit at work i don't want to take the chance of it not starting. last year it started up to -10 with now problems had the batterys tested and they are fine.... Do you think if it was the glow plug rely it would show a code??? or not???

thats crazy
some times under 20 degrees farenheit my glowplug lights doesnt even come on
if it comes on it wont stay on for more than 2 seconds
it fires right up no high idle or anything
you should plug it in
help the starter out
cause it isnt exactly cheap when you have to replace it!

They usually do...

try scanning the truck anyway, you might have a MIL light problem... which is sorta common (read, cluster failure) on the older trucks.

Maybe two fresh batteries might help.

I just had this problem as well.. get the glow plugs checked by a good diesel shop, not just one who will read codes. My glow plugs were disconnected at the first glow plug from the main power supply wire, no codes, no check engine light and dealer couldn't find it (yes they are that bad). Take a voltage meter and check to see that your glow plugs are getting power, you can get to them behind the fender, look like spark plugs but are all connected by a strip of metal (unless cali truck, then they are strung with wires). You can also check the voltage from the output posts on the control box, which is a little black box with 3 large wires coming from it located at the back of the engine, slightly on the drivers side against the fire wall. One wire comes from the battery, the other 2 supply the intake heater and glow plugs. Check each for voltage. May have a bad controller.. should be able to fix it from there. Or take it to a good shop that has someone besides a world of warcraft champion for a shop manager and can actually troubleshoot mechanical problems and not just plug in a computer.

Had the same problem as martincc, the wire was busted after the first glow plug then it burned out that glow plug too. I was changing the glowplug and i snapped it off. Now i have some more fun to deal with....LOL....
