i can't picture the exact design of the turbo right now (as to which way it spins) but the only time i've ever seen left hand threads on anything is to counteract the way it rotates so i'm sure thats why.
do you think that it's possible that when they rebuilt it that they didn't replace the nut, i would think that would be standard procedure?

Ok heres what happend when the shop rebuilt the turbo they put new wheels seals and bearings in it. When they friction welded the exhaust wheel onto the shaft it must not have welded properly or something and the exhaust wheel broke off the shaft and went through the exhaust. The compressor wheel looks perfect but the exhaust wheel is in several hundred pieces and the exhaust housing looks a little chewed up. The rebuild shop is gonna stand behind it so looks like it will all work out. Just gotta pay to ship it back and forth again.
Can u say FUBAR! Again that really sucks, it is no easy job installing or uninstalling turbos on these trucks. I hope they fix it for ya good this time!!

HTT did the rebuild my buddy Nathan is a dealer for them and wanted to send it to send it there so we did. I didn't wanna say who did the rebuild incase it was my screw up i didn't want their name being involved. The guy from HTT said that when they friction weld the shaft onto the exhaust wheel 1 out of every 200 on average breaks like this and they are going to fix it for me so Im happy with that.
For all those that have an AK5 on a dmax is there any easy way to hook up the oil drain on these damn things?
I had everything else unbolted and the turbo ready to come off, except for the two oil drain bolts, in probably 20 minutes. Those two oil drain bolts took me an hour to get out. and they took us an hour and a half for those two bolts to get in the first time!!! What a PITA!!!

Which oil drain bolts are you trying to remove while the turbo is still on the truck. I know with the GT40 you have to assemble the turbo, ped, and oil drain and install it in onr peice just like the stocker comes out. This requires removal of the up pipes to get to the bottom two bolts.
The dmax definatly aint no cummins when it comes to turbo swaps....the dmax is a real PITA!!!

On the AK5 thats not necessary to do it that way. I only hade to take the four nuts off the turbo that holds it to the pedestal and remove the exhaust, intake, and boost tube. Also have to remove the oil supply and drain. The two bolts im talking about getting to is the two that holds the drain to the turbo not the drain to enginie. Once the turbo is set on the pedestal its a real PITA to get to those two bolts!

There really is no "easy" way to get to the drain tube bolts. Your best bet is to get a little stubby 12mm wrench to get those two bolts off. I personally can get the whole turbo off in about 15-20 min. If for some reason they cant do a rebuild on it, send it in to us and we can put her back together. It looks like most of the cart is still usable so so that is the good news. Sorry to hear about that.
