hey guys with diesel so high and me driving 60+ miles a day i'm looking for ways to get better fuel economy my truck is basically bone stock no lift or bigger tires far as add ons just the usuall modified intake, edge w/att, and a jeg's 5" exauhst. my question is i still have the muffler on that the kit came with will taking off the muffler and going to straight pipe do any thing beside make my truck louder for fuel economy, or in doing this will it cause my mileage to go down from bieng to free flow on just a programer.
have tried airing up tires to 65 instead of 55 tried programmer on all power levels have slowed down no matter what i do i can't get past 17.5mpg any sugestions

Hmm I doubt the muffler would make a difference for the MPG's. If you had a CAT id say to remove that for some help.
Do you get 17.5 on the highway or around town?
I dont know if its me or what but I just pulled a load and after that my mileage went up a few MPG's. Im not sure if the computer changed the fuel ratio or what

At the light load you are running the motor at cruising down the freeway, no, removing the muffler will not net you any measurable gains. The 5" muffler should have more than enough flow.
17.5 is a respectable mileage number for a 3/4 ton 4x4 truck ya know. Not terrible. Sure it could be better, but you have alot of truck there.
I would say that switching to synthetic lubes is good for ABOUT 1-1.5 mpg.
Other than that, only other idea I have is drop in the Suncoast 6 speed conversion. It will get you an extra overdrive gear to get those RPM's down. Not a cheap upgrade by any means, but driving as much as you are, it may be worth looking into. Also, in that kit, you get the performance VB, so its really 2 upgrades in one.

far as rpm wise i keep them around 17-1800 rpms right in the dmax's peak tourqe range what amazes me even adding the edge and big exaust did not do anything for mileage and its not like im hot rodding the truck around town it's all freeway miles at 60-65 mph. have considered going to synthetic in the engine already go 6,000 miles on delo had the oil tested recently soot levels were low so i could go longer so i might consider switching to syn.

I went straight pipe as well and noticed nothing, It is alot louder though. I have a Texas truck so it has no Cat either. I have the Edge on #4 all the time and my DIC says 19.3 combined freeway and street driving.
I just switched my tires from stock 245's to 265's this week so I will check to see if it drops any. I do love the look of the bigger tire too. Fills up the wheelwell nicely!!!
I have a 2002 3500 4x4 dually with the lb7 and get between 7-10mpg towing and 18-20mpg without towing on the highway. all I have done is 4" from down pipe back with a glass pack no cat. problem I have is the injectors go out around 40,000 to 50,000 mile
