| Runaway Okay, I put this question in this forum because this is what I have, but it is really just a general engine question. What is a runaway engine and what causes it. I heard a mechanic talking about one, a while back, and I was just curious what it was. I know that it can't be good.........

| i think its when oil is able to get into the combustion chamber and act as a fuel. pretty much wont shut off til its out of oil or you can cut off the air supply. either some wood or an air knife setup. not sure if its also able to do this with the diesel itself but it might? not sure....

| I've heard it can be caused by somehow the turbo oil feed leaking into the compressor housing then feeding that oil into the intake of the engine, thus feeding the engine fuel and air out of control

| Ya! At least on some of the old 6.0 PS Furd engines, if the oil seal on the turbo blew & oil could get into the intake, then she would go go go -more heat-more boost-more oil - ultimate failure. This was more of a problem with pre-electronic diesels. Basically, uncontrolled oil or fuel has to get into the intake & off, she goes. My Kubota tractor has a manual fuel shut off to kill the fuel to the injector pump as a safety.

| Pretty much any fuel source (even gas or alcohol vapor) that is exposed to the intake while running will cause it to continue to "run away" until the source is gone... One of the places I used to work in doing tank farms in gas terminals, one of their gas trucks was offloading at a store and the guy left his truck running and the gasoline vapors caused the truck to run away and when the motor blew it caught on fire and actually ended up exploding and burning the store he was at

| the old green leakers were notorious for running away...racks sticking, turbo seals blowing... and the ford...very good explanation too.

| Some of these service trucks in the oil field are required to have air knifes in order to prevent a run-away situation. If you pulled into a location with a major gas leak, you would pull the gas in through the intake causing it to take off and start running on natural gas. Sent from AutoGuide.com Free App

| been around a few diesel engine runaways. one was when i was working near a asphalt pulverizer and the machine hit a natural gas line then the big cat motor revved up to like 5500 rpm until the operator shut her down with a air knife. It could very well happen to your truck or any other .the most common is the seals or bearings go out in the turbo filling the turbo with oil then that goes into the combustion chamber and bam away she goes.. first thing you would need to do is find a way to plug the intake to cut off air.
