What are signs of a bad alternator?

Im not 100% sure, but my new Dmax compared to my old one has this deep whining sound that goes with the rpm of the engine, to me it sounds like an alternator, i remember that sound from one of my old 1500 gassers. My old dmax never made this sound. Its very inoying, its not the turbo i know that sound. the voltage is over 14, any ideas? Also i havent had a chance to use the A/C yet. could it be that making the noise if it was bad?

it could be your alt bearing going out. but also check the idler pully and ten. they sould just like bad alt bearing.
if you can take off the serp belt and spin the pully by hand if they are really bad you could here it. ( not all the time )

Ya Id slip the belt off and check. The alternator and tensioner pulley should spin freely without mutch resistance if any.

To check the a/c compressor just turn it on and see if the noise gets better or worse.

I forget exactly where butits the pully thats not connected to anything. Thats usually how you remove the belt. Gotta get a 1/2 drive ratchet and push on it. Then remove the belt.
