JC1843 was asking the same questions I was thinking. I went from a chevy 454 to the LLY like you bought about 1-1/2 years ago and have had a smile on my face ever since. My truck pulls a 9,000 lbs load on flat ground like its not even there. You notice it under acceleration but you can tell the truck could handle twice as much. When pulling grades, did you make sure your tow/haul switch was on? This will prevent your truck from gear hunting while pulling grades. You can also shut the OD off and lock in 4th if you notice that's where the truck would like to run.

When I hit a grade, I slow the truck down to 60-65 and disable OD. Truck then pulls the grade without a sweat.

I agree that the IOH kit is an excellent improvement but it didn't give me much more pulling power, just reduced temps while pulling.

I hope this helps, I think you might be expecting too much from the truck. 9,000lbs is some weight, you'll feel it back there, but I bet your diesel will run circles around that old 6.0.

Ok, looks like I’m doing the LBZ mod first! Where is the cheapest place to buy it?
But seeing as how a few people indicated there may be something wrong with the truck, I have to ask, what could it be??? There are no codes, the stock tire size is LT265/75R16E, and there doesn’t appear to be a skip in the engine. This is my first diesel truck, so I don’t know what to expect from my truck, and I don’t think there is anything “wrong” with it except for the fact that it seemed to have a tough time pulling a 9000lb trailer!

When I hooked up the trailer and started up a steep driveway I noticed the engine seemed to be working really hard, when I got on a level road everything seemed ok!
When I got on the highway it seemed to pull the trailer ok until I started to encounter the many long inclines on the highway. This is where the truck started losing its pulling power, mph started dropping so I floored it and the mph increased ever so slightly.
I was expecting it to pull these inclines without a problem being that it’s a diesel.
Were my expectations too high??? Or does this indicate a problem other than the infamous air restriction the LLY’s are known for?

That’s why I asked what mods are needed to this stock LLY engine.
Hopefully the LBZ mod will fix the problem.

If this sounds like I do have a problem with the engine then please feel free to tell me what it is that you think is wrong with it.
And again, it is a 2004.5 GMC Sierra 3500 CC, LB, SRW with 110K miles, bone stock!

Thanks,
Brian

It may have been, but I wasn't really paying attention to that, this was the first time I trailered with a diesel so I didn't know what was considered to be "normal" if you know what I mean. The coolant temp was around 210, and the trans temp was between 180-220.

you shouldn't have any power issues with an lly...mine on stock tuning tows like a sumbitch...

anyways since you are new to diesel here's some pointers...

1. wait for the glow plugs to start your engine.
2. if the engine is under stress like towing or just leadfooting after you park wait a minute before shutdown...this will help your turbo live longer.
3. since you have an lly as others have said take care of the mouthpiece.
4. block the egr...it keeps hot, dirty, useless air from going back into your engine.
5. if you tow take advantage of the tow haul option mode.
6. keep an eye out for injector harness problems..its common on lly's. it will either sound like you have a misfire or will throw a check engine light and run on 4 cylinders.. this is usually an easy fix with the ice pick trick but a dealer will want $500 plus.
7. change your fuel filter regularly, no more then ten thousand miles. 7 or 8k miles is really where you should change it. keeping this fresh makes a HUGE difference.
8. keep up with engine and transmission oil services.
9. keep an eye on idler/pitman wear and front hubs. they tend to go bad...

if i think of more ill add...and welcome to the site

you are going to have to elaborate. Nobody can fix an expectation issue for you.

Thanks for the tips Red!
I'll double check with the previous owner to verify when he did the fuel filter last, but he told me he changed the fuel filter every other oil change and he just changed the oil before I bought it! So I guess it should be changed in the next 3-5k miles, or maybe I'll just change it this week to be sure!
Where's the best place to get an LBZ MP cheap?

I suggest you do your research. There are people who do not understand what they are telling you.

You have defined thermal feedback. Lots to understand.
