Which programmer & exhaust system for 2004.5 LLY

Ok, Just got my first Diesel truck last week, I already did the LBZ MP Mod, CAI mod to original airbox, and the EGR blocker plate. I'm ready for more mods!!!

Now I'm looking for recommendations on which programmer and exhaust system to go with. I’m not looking to spend top dollar for either, but I don’t want to get junk either!

As far as the programmer goes I want one that will block codes, give me a moderate or better increase in performance and most importantly much better MPG’s for a reasonable price!
Maybe even one with a display that lets me change the tune to my needs on the fly!

For the exhaust system I want performance & mpg’s and a nice rumble/tone!
But I don’t want to get into the $500 range or higher! Am I asking for too much?

Is a 4” system with muffler and no cat better than a straight 5” system? Or should I go with a 5” with muffler and no cat? And again I don’t want junk either!!! $400 range or less.
Vendors, feel free to make me an offer I can't refuse!!!

Please get back to me with your recommendations; I’m ready to buy them asap!

Off topic newbie question – why do I read so many posts on this forum that talk about engine smoke as being a good thing?
One that comes to mind is “I can smoke a 3 lane highway if I want to” Why would you want to?????????????????

My truck doesn’t smoke at all, is that a bad thing???
Does a programmer at its highest tune cause a lot of engine smoke, and if it does, how is that a good thing???

Programmers, especially canned tunes are generic tunes built for year specific trucks. The smoke comes from running a bigger tune that usually adds a lot of pulsewidth or mm3 of fuel to the stock tuning. This can result in incomplete burn with the amount of air available, which means lots of black smoke. Not necesasrily a good or bad thing, but some people like to be able to blow some now and then (or all the time ).....

The best mileage is probably gonna come from a custom EFI Live tune, but an EFI Live V2 will cost you ~$750. A tune or dsp from a vendor here will take care of your needs, but it all depends on what kind of set up you are looking for. Check out mike's site or call him, he can explain what would be best for you.

As far as exhaust, its all up to you and your ears. I have a 4" straight pipe. It's loud, turns heads but has a nasty drone when the windows are up and Im doing 65-70. I dont care about that since 99% of the time Im doing 90+, cranking tunes or all the windows are down.

Chad at alligatorperformance offers some pretty kick ass deals on exhaust and tuner options. Check out the site or call him, he can set you up.

I was a computer tech for many years so the EFI Live won't intimidate me too much, but I don't want to spend $750 anyways, I was thinking of the Duramileage, but I don't think it does everything I want it to! Or does it?

I didn't say "black smoke", did I?
