Need help changing the starter!

Anyone know of a good write up with pictures on how to do this? I honestly don't see how there is enough room for this thing to come out! Pulled the fender liner out and I can see it in there but I don't see how it will come out from the side or the bottom. Can you wait to undo the main cable for when you drop it out? I don't see how to get a wrench or socket on it the way it sits in there. This whole thing is showing me why I much prefer working on motorcycles to vehicles haha!

One thing I keep reading is to loosen the down pipe for more room-I loosened the clamp but I don't see how anything will move unless I remove the rest of the exhaust system..I must be missing something here.

this is out of a helms manual

1) Disconnect both Negative battery cables.
2) Remove the front passenger wheel/tire - jack it up first.
(I think all you need to do is jack up at the frame in front - this will lower the tire mostly out of the way)
3) Remove the wheel inner liner - be careful of the those two-part GM connectors.
4) Remove the batter positive connector and solinoid wires.
(You might want to spray some WD-40 or similar to loosen up the rusty ones)
5) Remove the starter motor bolts.
(Two bolts - they go into a triangularish plate that holds both the motor and solenoid) (You will also be able to see the flywheel through the hole where the gear mates).

Reverse procedure to reinstall
TORQUE NUMBERS - NOTE foot-pounds(lb-ft) and inch-pounds (lb-in)
78 N-m (58lb-ft) STARTER BOLTS
3.4 N-m (30lb-in) SOLENOID NUT
9 N-m (80lb-in) BATTERY POSITIVE CABLE

hope it helps. Its from a 2001 but Im sure its similar

how is it not? its as simple as that... remove bolts.

haha ya i hear ya It was like the instructions to remove my factory downpipe.

To answer your one question u can wait to remove the starter before you remove the cable. Not sure how much slack it has so it might not drop much. Ive never done it before on the d-max but usually its a pretty easy job. Like everything is on any vehicle other than a GM

Think a thin walled socket and lots of universal joints are needed last I looked and at the end a HUGE T-Bar! :-)

My 'pain in the ass' meter is starting to peg out. Any idea how much a shop would charge to swap it?
