Well performance is pretty obvious....nearly 400 horsepower from the factory and 650 lb-ft of torque speaks for itself.

Yeah I don't think it will be too long before we are seeing 14 second heavy duty pickups from the factory....and once they're chipped runnin 13's shouldn't be hard.....we'll see I guess

i bet you any thing, this is going to turn into another muscle car war of the 70's. only heavy duty style. and thats okay with me. didnt that little war drive the price of the mustang. camaro, charger and the others down pretty cheap?

Yeah competition keeps prices down. So who knows, but the automakers also know that their heavy duty offerings are going to sell no matter what too. They're too popular. It's too bad that the fuel we're using during this "torque wars" can't be as cheap as it was in the 70's car wars....

I am new to the diesel engine performance thing. I always bought a vehicle and left it stock. What do different types of fuel injectors do for the motor? Better fuel economy? I have the newest Duramax and am getting 13.5 miles per gallon. It's only got 1500 miles on it. It's not close to its break-in stage. Does a bigger exhaust help mpg or does it strictly add horsepower? What about an intake? Chip? I may have asked too many questions. I would really appreciate the comments.

Thanks

Hey man ask all the questions that you want, that's what these forums exist for is to help people find an easier way to get their questions answered.
As for fuel injectors there are many of them out there. Unless you're going to build for a whole lot of power your stock ones will be fine. Most injectors are designed not just for better atomization but also increased flow for guys who want big power. And if you get a whole lot of fuel it's just going to give you a bunch of black smoke without upgrading to a bigger turbo, or series/twin turbos. I don't really think you can get much better fuel economy by adding more fuel! And with a lot of miles your mpg will improve.
A bigger free flowing exhaust adds power because it frees up the path for the air coming out of the turbo. They help a lot not just because of the flow, but also to lower exhaust temps.
As for an intake, beware. There's a ton of "high flow" intakes out there that are not lying, they are flowing a lot of air, but there's a flipside to that coin. The only ways to increase airflow through a filter are either to enlarge the surface area for filtration, or to enlarge the holes of the filtering element. Most of the high flow oil filters have the larger holes, and for a diesel you want cleaner air not dirtier! Any dirt that gets past your filter and into the combustion chamber literally sandblasts at the cylinder walls. Over a long period of time it can eventually wear away the cross hatch and perhaps cause blow-by. There have been tests done to back that up. If you do go with one of those high flows, get a pre filter, something, anything to go over it to help keep dirt out. I would suggest the BHAF (big honkin' air filter) for most trucks.
As for a chip, they provide the biggest bang for the buck. There are so many of them out there. It just depends on how much power you want the chip to offer, and ease of adjustability. Some are programmers like superchip that reprogram through the obdII port, others go right in line with the computer and are adjustable on the fly. Let us know a little more of what you're looking for in a chip and we'll let you know!

It sounds like you have a little knowledge on the diesel stuff. I really appreciate your help. So you are telling me that it would probably be better to stick with the stock air filter and go with the chip and the bigger exhaust? The programmer or chip that I want is a Bully Dog or an Edge. I want one that I can adjust on the fly and one that has the temp. guages on the display. Unfortunately, they don't have them yet for the LBZ Duramax. Does the Bully Dog or the Edge have capabilities of putting the original stock settings back on the truck computer? I was wondering how you guys get around the warranty issue.
