Edge Juice W/ Tude??

I'm sure this has been discussed at length, but I need to know a little more about the edge juice tuners. I am currently bidding on one for my 05 duramax on ebay, so if anyone can help me with the following questions:

1. I've heard that use with modes 5-6 is not good with stock exhaust and transmission.....if this is the case, why?

2. How much can you tow / haul in modes 1-2? is it the same as the factory stock settings??

My truck is stock with no engine, exhaust, or transmission mods. Any help is appreciated, please PM response or email at jeffrsm@tds.net

Anything else I need to know about the tuner would be great as well.

Thanks!

First, BEWARE of EBAY, the Edge Tuners have had problems in the past and if you get a bad one there is no telling what kind of service you will get. You may just get stuck with a bad tuner.

1. I've heard that use with modes 5-6 is not good with stock exhaust and transmission.....if this is the case, why?

No it is not good, the stock transmission can only handle up to about 90 hp over stock before it begins to slip and cause problems. I would also recommend sticking with either PPE, Quadzilla, or Banks Tuners for your truck.

2. How much can you tow / haul in modes 1-2? is it the same as the factory stock settings??

Yes, pretty much, it will help to improve your fuel mileage a little, but especially without upgrading your tranny I would not do any more than level 2-3 while towing.

My truck is stock with no engine, exhaust, or transmission mods. Any help is appreciated, please PM response or email at jeffrsm@tds.net

I would also suggest an Intake Mouthpiece Upgrade, EGR Blocker Plate, PCV Reroute, BD Full Bore Manifold, EGT and Boost Gauges, Diamond Eye Exhaust with a true 4 in down pipe, and Full Synthetic Fluids throughout if you would like to see your truck last a llifetime running happy. All Depending on your Budget of course.

Anything else I need to know about the tuner would be great as well.

Thanks!
I hope this is helpful!

God Bless!!!

Chris

Great info..thanks Chris....it doesn't sound like the edge is the one I want then...as much as I like it. Hopefully I get outbid on it! I don't plan on putting that much money in the truck as far as an intake and exhuast as the truck is owned by the company I work for. I was only looking for a modest HP and fuel economy increase. If all else fails I can just run the truck in level 3 and lower.

Which tuners of the other brands do you recommend otherwise??

^X2 on that. I got mine from ebay. Bid $500 bucks for it. When i installed it, it made my truck mess up. i turned the truck on and it started knockin and sounded like it wasnt getting any fuel. I unplugged it and the truck worked fine. called edge and told them about what it was making the truck do, and they sent me a new one. If your gonna get the edge then your better off buying it straight from edge products, or one of the vendors here on the site.

Stay away from the edge. Decent power and nice features, but they have issues with loosing communication with the crankshaft position sensor thus causing it to tweak out and your truck to run very erratic and then dying.

Friends don't let friends buy Edge Juice w/ Attitudes.
Stick with PPE or Quadzilla. They know the Dmax a little better.

if you are looking for some cheap performance, upgrade the mouthpiece on your LLY to the LBZ style. If you are looking tow, and keep it safe, the performance gains of the MP upgrade are incredible. I know this sounds crazy, but I would bet you couldn't tell the difference between the Edge on stage 1 and a new MP. It is a terrible design that GM corrected, thank God! There is nothing wrong with your LLY, as McRat has peoved that with the fastest "production" pickup in the world using the same engine you have.

several people bash the LLY and the Edge... both of them have their own unique issues.. and if you do enough research, you will be in good shape.

I'm not going to steer you away from the Edge, as it is a nice all in one unit, but if not used correctly (ie: tranny re-learn after switching power levels, and staying out of stage 5 without the prerequisites) But, that said, the Edge does offer some nice display capabilities that others can't, and if purchased from a dealer, Edge factory support is TOP NOTCH compared to some other tuner companies out there.

This topic has come up SEVERAL times and most of the time, its the same result. For whatever reason, there are several guys on this site that have had a sour experience with the Edge products. Myself not included. I have sold and installed several units on all makes of Diesels. Used them on a Cummins and Duramax of my own, with no problems.

I understand I could come across as bias for Edge, but they are good to me.

Back to the thread tho, look into a LBZ mouthpiece mod (several threads on here) and some 4" exhaust and ditch the cat. Cats are icky. They smell.

Best of luck on the eBay auction... if you don't win, look to the vendors for more options.. considering this isnt "your" truck, you might want to play it safe with a canned tune from PPE, this way when you get your own truck someday, you can tune it up, even if its not an LLY.

Ok, back to work... have a good one!

Im not bashing edge, I like their product and love their customer support.

But their product has a flaw and they have yet to fix it so until then im not going to reccommend it.

Trust me when your driving through a Wisconsin Blizzard at midnight on the Interstate in white out conditions with 50mph winds, and -50* wind chills, you dont want to be stranded on teh side of the road. That is what happened to me and the gf in the 02, and there i was in a sweatshirt with a burnt out underhood light and no flashlight or gloves, unhooking it. This was the 2nd time it has happened and it was a new unit.

It also happened to one of my sponsors in his 04 LLY, and two other locals with Juices on LB7s. Its very common and Edge admits it, they keep claiming they have an update to fix it but so far that hasnt worked.

Yes its easy to unhook, but not everybody is that mechanically inclined.

Its features are nice and we piss pound our 02 with it always on level 3 even when grossing 45,000lbs. It also gets beat on level 5 from time to time as well and the trans is still holding up fine, the rest of the truck isnt though.
