Wastegate?

So being new to owning a diesel truck I am finding out about mods and upgrades that you don't have for gas burners.
One of those I read a little about was wastegates, and that my LLY doesn't have one.
Is a wastegate for the purpose of extending your turbo's life, or is there a performance incentive behind it?
When if at all would a wastegate be considered?

turbos used to be controlled by waiste gates many still are , the dmaxx is now controlled by vvt turbos

lly and up turbos have electronically controled vanes that do the smae think as a wastegate but at even better. it helps spool up 10 fold
