two airfilters????

hey guys its justin i got a quick question? what if instead of plugging the air resonator(the thing with 6.6 duramax printed on it under your hood) you get you a little air filter and put on it??? i got curious today and took it off and drove around and it seemed the turbo lit quicker and a massive cut down on soot like alot ill get some pics up for you guys here later
thanks justin

you would bypass the MAF if you did that, allowing more air than expected into the engine.

there is no reason to bypass the maf, if you want more flow do the airbox mod or just pull the box and put a filter on it, or of course get an intake.

Honestly its a terrible idea to do that. Did you put a filter over the resonator opening before you went driving around? If not, then you just sucked a whole bunch of dirt and dust into your engine and through your turbo, which is NOT good.

There are a couple reasons its a TERRIBLE idea. First is that it will throw off the a/f ratio, since less air will be going by the MAF sensor the computer will not send as much fuel as it should, which actually means you'll probably make less power than you should.

The second reason is that you'll be sucking in HOT HOT HOT air. Heat is the enemy of a turbocharger. Compressing the air heats it greatly, and when you compress already hot air, then the intercooler can't cool it enough before it gets to the engine, and you get a hot charge of air, which is virtually useless to the motor. End result is less complete combustion, higher EGT's, and loss of power.

I can't stress enough how bad of an idea this is. Either plug the resonator, or put it back on. DO NOT leave it open, even with a filter on it. Nothing good can come from it.

its not a gasser, we dont need a certain amt of air or fuel. more is better, both fuel and air. but you are right that would pull in about the hottest air.

Your right we dont need a certian amount of air or fuel but the engine does need to know what it is getting.

because its closer to the turbo its going to try to suck most of the air through that little filter until theres enough resistance to pull it though the main filter. I'm sure it going to get dirty very quick and I'll bet doesnt filter as well as the main
