Well I am new to this forum, I posted the other day about a 07 I was considering purchasing but this 05 was just so much cleaner and a ridiculous deal. So I am now a proud owner of my first Duramax.
The truck is already powerful enough for what I want/need. However, I am looking to do a few things and would honestly like some advice. Looking to do straight pipes, I am from CA, so forgive my ignorance- as I do not know what the restrictions are yet on what I can and cannot do. Also, I would like to maybe have a mild, solid programmer that will give me a few options for towing (horse/stock trailers) and maybe a MPG tune for commuting. Not trying to race people or take it to the strip etc. Just solid tow rig with a nice power and a good exhaust note. :cool
Appreciate any help.

First off, welcome to the DF. I can set you up with whatever you need!
Being in cali, and your truck being an 05, you'll need to have the catalytic converter on for emissions tests. But after that you can take it off if you choose to do so. It will definitely sound better, and keep EGT's lower without the cat.
the stock transmission will handle 90rwhp or less with no problems. Above that and you're asking for trouble. You have a solid plan though. A tuner and exhaust are the best two bang for the buck mods you can do for your truck. It will sound and perform better in every aspect.
If you want to get started right away, I'll be more than happy to talk over some options with you, and find the mods that will suit you best. Just let me know if there's anything I can do to help!
Thanks for the quick replies. I'll be sure to let you know gr8shot.
I know a local guy that is selling a hypertech programmer model 30029 for 260 bucks. I did a search on here before posting and it seems to be a general consensus that its a good "middle of the road" programmer and not one of the really expensive and extreme ones; Which mild and dependable is what i'm shooting for. Is this a pretty good deal that is worth the money? The other recommend programmers are several hundred dollars more and may be more than what I'm asking for in the first place. Any suggestions??

I agree, either talk him down some, or you can get a better quality tuner for not much more. Thats too high in my opinion for that tuner, especially being used. And you have to be careful with used tuners, sometimes people dont put them all the way back to stock, so the programmer is still locked to their VIN and you can't use it. Just a heads up.
Welcome to the site....I took the same route as you....looking for a newer Duramax, but got such a good deal on my 05 I had to purchase it...I've only had my truck for a month and this site has so much great information. I have already replaced the stock LLY mouthpiece with a LBZ mouthpiece. Very easy to do, and noticeable performance gains for under $100.00. Good Luck with your truck...
Yeah, thats another one of the first mods a guy needs to do to an LLY. Very helpful in longevity of the engine and turbo.
My dad was watching this old movie a long time ago with practically no words, and a guy with a big ol beard, and I told him to change the channel. then i started watching, and it was a damn good movie!! I'd have never guessed lol.
