I'da know just an idea, I was kinda thinking it would keep the heat from soaking in to the plastic and increasing air temps....okay after reading over this I sound like dumb arse for asking but I gotta.
not bad idea, nice brainstorm there, may be worth tryin,,let us know of any improvments you observe....

By far the best way to keep heat out of the intake, is at the air source...the box. Put all your attention there, it is plenty defective.

Killerbee, you have some really good information. Thanks for all the help so far!I still want to get that ported mouthpiece, will just take a little time. I want to do some more testing first. Want to check temps in the air box stock and then with some mods to see the difference.

One thing I have not seen anyone discuss (I'm still trying to get everything read since I'm new here) is adding additional holes on the inner fender where the foil/rubber patch is at. I have some panel punches and was thinking of adding a few 1.5" holes in that area for more cold air. (or maybe a 3" hole with a hole saw if done carefully) Still need to look at this carefully before doing it.

I pulled the foil off the inner fender for cooler air and then modified the front of the air box with a 3" hole saw. I want to run a 3" flex hose up from the behind the bumper into that hole. I also have sealed around the fender side of the air box as well as along both sides to stop hot air from getting in there. Pulled the trailer great, all temps stayed down. (Still don't have an EGT gauge yet). The tranny temp ran about 150-160 except on a long grade where it went up to about 190. Engine temp stayed right at 210.
Ambient air was only in the 60's so it was pretty cool outside.

Be very careful in the rain if you run the flex pipe up to that hole. These engines such a lot of air and if its raining hard enough will such a lot of water through that pipe.

Kyle,

I've been thinking about that and wondering if it would suck up the water. If I stop it behind the bumper area, it would be protected from most of the drops. Probably won't put a scoop on it but might flare the inlet an inch or so to help get air into the hose.

Might be able to leave a gap at the bottom of the hose for any water that might be pulled up a place to drain off.

I can see I'll need to think about this some more.

If you are asking me that question, the answer is no. I have been on a business trip for the past 8 days and just got back home this afternoon. (Sunday)

Got the KB mouthpiece on today after I got home but still need to play with the box and check some temps.

Because of the occasional bug I find on the K&N filter, I feel the area under the headlight from the side facing the grill area may be more of a source for moisture than from the tire well.
