Was your trailer brakes working?

An exhaust brake would be a very good add on.

What does that load weigh? It really just sounds like you just didn't have your trailer brakes set up high enough.

Yep,when trailer brakes are working properly, they should be able to almost drag the truck to a stop..I have set the gain too high upon taking off and the 1st time I applied the brakes, smoked all 8 tires on the trailer..With the trailer unloaded test the gain when pushing the brakes, you should feel the trailer tug a [LITTLE]on the truck, not a lot though. Then you can adjust when you get the feel of the load on there..

total load of trailer and equipment was 15,750 lbs. Sounds like I should have had the brake controller set to a higher setting!!

You have other issues if thats all that you were towing.

Like ive said time an again we gross over 45,000 with our 02 and it stops the load fine. No fancy brakes or brake pads or exhaust brakes. Just a nice prodigy brake controller.

Yes and no....Too high of a setting is bad news..Just do the empty test like above, then adjust the gain up some more after you get the load on there.IF your brakes are workin properly, try this: Unloaded the trailer should drag the truck to a stop, you want it when you hit the brakes unloaded,to give some slight drag on the truck, kinda like a lil tug back on the truck at the end of your stop..
