P0540

I have a code P0540 0n my 2006 3500. The check engine lite is on after I replaced both batteries and the fuel filter. After I changed the filter I pumped the fuel pump, forgot to open the bleeder valve, and tried to start the truck. Then my 73 year old brain wised up and I bleed the line(about three times) and the truck started, with the check engine lite on. I drove about 3 miles but it has stayed on. Ideas??

IIRC the P0540 is the air intake grid heater.

I found the heater and it has a hot red size 10 wire connected to it. That seems to say the relay is bad and it is hiden in the small plastic box on top of the heater. Correct?

No the relay for the heater is under the main fuse box under the hood on the drivers side, it's a 175amp fuse IIRC and is hot all the time, so do not ground it, or you will weld your engine parts together, don't ask me how I know

I would just try to clear the code and see if it comes back as it does not hurt performance.

Probably the Glow Plug module is the problem-- 06 trucks seem to have a lot of glow plug problems

The wire feeding the heater is hot all the time, so that means a relay contact has to be turning the heater on and off thru the ground wire otherwise the heater would be on all the time. Ideas?
