I'm not sure if I get this, pardon my ignorance. I'm trying to decipher a vin on a model year 2006 truck.

The 8th digit is a "2" which, if the quote above is correct, would mean that this truck doesn't have the 2006 LLY engine, which 2006 LLY engine is supposed to be closer to the LBZ.

Also this 2006 VIN "2" truck is mated to the manual shift 6 speed Allison, which I have also read indicates that we are talking about a "2006 LLY" which is closer to the LBZ engine.

And if all of this is true, then in the 2006 model year, there were 3 engine options:

- VIN "2" - "LLY" - Like an 04.5 - 05 LLY
- VIN "3" - "06 LLY" - Major changes to the LLY, same internals as the LBZ - better than the VIN "2"
- VIN "D" - 06 "LBZ"

Wikipedia says that the 06 LLY (the LBZ-like LLY) is a VIN 2. More specifically, it seems to contradict the VIN 3 Code above:
"The 2006 LLY (engine code "2") debuted in the beginning of 2006 and ended production with the start of the 2007 calendar year. Mechanically it is identical to the LBZ and is mated to the new 6 speed Allison transmission however it retained the LLY designation. Its output is 310 hp (231 kW) at 3200 rpm and torque is 605 lb·ft (820 N·m) at 1600 rpm. Huge changes were made for the 06 LLY"
Duramax V8 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anyhow, I want the LLY that's like the LBZ. The truck I am about to buy has a VIN "2" and the manual shift 6 speed Allison. With all this conflicting information, which engine do you think is in this truck. I've seen 2006 GMC and Chev Diesels with Vin 2, and D. But never a VIN 3.... searched the VIN Check section too. Never a VIN 3.

If the VIN 2 is the 04.5-05 style LLY, then it looks like there were 3engine options in 2006, and all 3 were mated to the 6 speed manual shift Allison.

When I add up three factors:
1. Wikipedia says the 06 LLY has a VIN 2 (never references any VIN 3 as above);

2. Wikipedia and others say the 06 LLY is mated to the 6 speed Allison Auto (manual shift) - which is what the vin 2 truck I'm looking at has;

3. Existence of a VIN 3 would mean there were 3 different engines in model year 2006 - a vin 2, a vin 3 and a vin D. Never heard that there were 3 different engines in MY2006; and

4. Searched the VIN check section and internet, never seen a VIN 3 engine code;
......they all add up to the thought that "VIN 3" quoted above for the 06 LLY (that's mechanically identical to the LBZ) is an error.

I want the 06 LLY because the internals are better and the overheating issues are solved. The mystery is whether there is any such thing as a VIN 3. Any help is appreciated!

Anybody ever seen an '06 with a VIN 3?

I think I figured this out.

VIN "3" engine code is for the 06 Hummer Alpha with the 06 LLY engine. Had to find this on an oil filter cross reference site. Same site shows only VIN 2 and VIN D for the GMC/Chevy trucks for 2006.

This was just a repost from another member that wasnt a moderator at the time (i think), but you are correct with the information. I looked it up on dieselpowermag.com. But it also looks like you answered your own question...so there is a vin code 3 that is an LLY, just not in a silverado or sierra.
