Top 10 Duramax Tips, Do's+Don'ts, Advice

Gentelmen,
I just purchased my very first Duramax on Saturday. Seeing that this is my first Diesel I figured I would check with the pros on advice for owning and maintaining. I am interested in what your TOP 10 TIPS of advice are for being a Duramax owner. And if you don't have 10 that's ok! I'm a newbie who doesn't want to make newbie mistakes.

I have a 2006 BLACK GMC Sierra 2500HD SLE2 Duramax Allison 4X4 Crew LBZ with 39K Miles.

Any advice for a previous gasser owner?

Bill

Congrats on the new ride..
1. Buy good fuel. Look for a station that sells a lot of fuel so that you dont get fuel that has been setting in the tanks for weeks at a time.
2. Keep up on your maintenance. Keep your oil and filter changed by going X-amount of miles or by the DIC. Change your fuel filter at least every 10k. and buy a extra fuel filter and keep it with you in the truck. You never no win you might need it.
3. Have fun with it.

1. Don't neglect the fuel filter. Change it at regular intervals. Lots of problems come from a dirty fuel filter. A good idea to keep a spare on hand. Maybe even keep it in the truck.

No. 2 Anybody?

1) Get an EGR plate to keep the black tar out of the intake!!!!
2) Straight pipe it so that it will breathe better.
3) Use a good fuel additive for lubricity...Diesel Kleen or 2-cycle oil
4) Use a good synthetic oil (Amsoil, Schaffer's, Rotella,)
5) Ditto on the fuel filter thing!!!!!
6) Stay with the forums...these are some good guys.
7) Enjoy your truck....know it isn't perfect
8) Drink some beer and look at your truck a lot!
9) Play some George Strait through the stereo....it helps the truck run well.
10) Get on it once in awhile...it deserves it!

Hope this helps!!

This is good stuff keep em coming! couple questions, what all is involved with the straight pipe? Does that void my powertrain warranty? Will I get black smoke and more smell? i assume this means yanking out the catalytic and muffler. I'm happy with the performance for what I need it for so moding it will probably come later downt the road.

Also, do you use the Diesel Kleen on every tank?

I use 2-stroke oil every tank, but used to use Diesel Kleen. I only switched due to the info from the lubricity test results. 2-stroke provided a little better lube properties and it is less expensive. DK is fine though if you prefer. Alot of these guys use some other stuff (Stanadyne, OPD, etc..) These are good also, just not as easy to get a hold of. Other questions......guys???
