new ECM or programer?

I was wondering yesterday some of the guys were talking about buying an ECM with a program already on it. Whats the difference between that and buying a programer and doing it yourself? Pardon my ignorance but I'm learning on the go here.

they were talking about buying an ECM that one of our vendors programs with EFI live. their tunes will not be as rough on your drivetrain as say a canned tuner (programmer). You can get an ECM with 5 different tunes in it and a switch to change the program in the cab on the fly. EFI Live is not a beginner's tuner. It takes many hours to learn it and what to manipulate to create safe smooth power. Other programmers are basically generic tunes that work on many trucks.

the difference is buying a CUSTOM tailured tune to work for your truck or buying a tuner with tunes to work on all the trucks meeting a certain criteria!

Sorry I didnt reply yesterday, wrote that before work and had an unusally long friday-not get home untill 10 pm. What specifics will they need to know? Not looking for maxed out power but good pulling power, reliability, and good MPG.

Heres a related question. If you put in a new ECM With say a tune to delete the DPF and then at some point need to go in for warrenty work on a diff or something, would you have to put back in the stock ECM and in turn the DPF? They would no doubt run a scan and find that you had changed the ECM right?

So does this mean that you can have your ECM programmed without buying EFI Live? How would you be able to adjust it on the fly?

who are a few of our vendors that can do this? and can I keep my original ecm with its program on it and buy a salvage yard ecm to send in to be programed? That way 2 things can be done, 1 wont show up at dealership and 2 can keep driving truck till ecm gets there and back?

Yes you dont have to buy EFI live for this. The tuner will build all the tunes and give you the DSP switch. They all will give you excellent support.

As far as the ECM. I think you would be better off just buying an ECM from one of them with the tunes already installed. They will help you out if the ECM goes bad and it's not that much more for the ECM through them

The Tuners that i know have ECMs already tuned are IdahoRob, MMLMM, and Killerbee. I am pretty sure that Huskerdiesel does too. All these guys are site sponsors.
