How often should they be changed? What is a good air filter that I can put in the stock air box without any modifications? Does an aftermarket air filter perform any better than the stock one?
IF your stock filter is that power core, leave it alone. The K&N has been known to let dirt by. If you have that power core it is just fine.

that is the stock air filter in 2006 and newer d-max's. They call it a power core cause of its round shape.

Afe (advanced Flow Engineering) Has More Rag Stock And Will Not Allow Oil To Blow Past To Map Sensor
I'd have to say the K&N is much better than the aFe, let's just say I've seen the test first hand. K&N's don't let oil blow past anything. That was a company (aFe) trying to sale filters, they leaked that info. They were actually forced to retract that statement and pull it from there site! I don't deal with people that do business that way.......
The factory filters are restrictive regardless of which filter it is, the 05 1/2' and newer LBZ's slightly less however. K&N has a drop in that works excellent!

1. almost never if you are using stock. In the absense of a desire to listen, use the filter minder. It doesn't lie.
2. the 1618C stock element
3. No
but there are many people who just need to waste hard earned $. It is funny how some must make their own mistakes, inevitably do, then cover up the placebo derived conclusion with misleading public conclusions.
Killerbee, I would have to disagree with you. How much does a stock air filter cost?$40-50 bucks... how many times can you reuse your stock filter? what's going to flow better? Do the math. My hard earned money is going to be spent on the aftermarket filter that lasts millions of miles and flows much better than stock.
