Transmission fluid

I just bought my truck it and is due for its first transmission fluid replacement. I have been told without draining the converter you can expect 3-4 quarts. If you drain the converter you are looking at 12-13 quarts. I would like to know how this is done or is it simply a job that can't be done on your own. you need to have the proper equipment?

Well most people just change the fluid in the pan. It will take 7.7 qts to change the spin on filter and the fluid in the pan. Allison does not recommend flushing the tranny or changing the internal filter.

thanks Big Red, I just spoke with a friend of mine that has a two year old megacab with the 5.9 and with his 100k power train warranty was voided because he didn't change the tranny fluid every 36k miles as directed. It cost him over 2k to have it rebuilt. His a/c went out too less that 100 miles past his bumper to bumper warranty and after alot of arguing they would not cover that either... they wanted 1200 for the repairs as well. So I recon the best advice is... Don't count on your warrantys because they are probly not going to be honored anyway?
On a side note, I was told by a tranny specialist in our town that the allisons are their biggest source of work. I originally thought that the tranny might be flawed, now I think that it is not the tranny, it is the ignorance of people who constantly want more for nothing. They put a tuner in and max it out never realizing until it is too late their stock transmission has limitations.

The stock allison will last a very long time if there are no power adders on the truck. It can still last a long time if people understand about not adding over 90 hp. But some like me are not satisfied with 90 hp and want more.

Do you race that monster or is it just your daily driver? I see that you have already upgraded quite a few components, including the torque converter. Did you proactively do this or did the stock converter play out?

I do some racing, but nothing really serious, i just like all the extra power. I upgraded my tranny and T/C after i limped my stock one a few times with too much power. The stock T/C was actually still holding, but i had already burnt the clutches in the tranny.

sounds funny but I am fixing to order my PPE and My boss has a little mini cooper S model. It is surprisingly fast. Anyway, just because we were bored we decided to figure out our horsepower to weight ratios to try and determine who's vehicle is faster. after the calculations were done If I keep my tuner below the 90 hp it will be very close. He only has a 4 banger with right at 100 hp. Of course If I bump it up I can over take him handily... Atleast Once. Thats if the clutchplates hold. ha ha. Anyway, I am very excited to get my tuner. He is threatening to order a smaller pulley for his supercharger. I will let you know how it turns out.
