I just kind of went through this as I had a stuck 185 degree thermostat. It was stuck open so the truck wouldn't reach the proper operating temperature. It pretty much stayed in the 170 degree area when it should have been at 181 degrees. The first thermostat keeps the truck operating between 181-185 during normal operation then the second thermostat will open under conditions where additional cooling is needed like increased load or hot ambient temperatures without over cooling.

cause the japanese are still pissed over WW2...

That would make sense if the detroit 6.5 diesels didnt have two thermostats too. Unless you are saying detroit is in japan?
