I am wanting to get the best MPG out of my new to me 2007 2500 CC LBZ with 248k on the clock. I drive MOSTLY unloaded, in Florida, and im only seeing 16 -17 mpg. The tires on the truck are very new 285/75/16 , and I do correct for larger tire size in mileage calculations, and use GPS to compare. Im wondering how much the larger tires effect the fuel mileage, and what difference I would see if I went back to the 245/75/16 size that came on the truck. From what I have found, my tires are 2" taller, so it raises the truck 1 inch. I have always heard lower truck = better mileage, but I dont know how much 1 inch will change things. Any experience / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I am also planning to install a DSP5 and EFI tunes at some point. I want the economy tune, and the ability to switch to more power when I need it. I think this would give the best results for better mileage, over messing with the tires.
My pickup is in my sig. It had the stock 245/75/16 tires on it when I bought it and I haven't put enough miles on them to wear them out and get new ones. I can get 20-22 unloaded running 70-75 down the highway. My mods probably help some, but I attribute it mainly to the small tire size. With that being said, I can't wait to put on a 265/75/16. The 245s look so tiny. I think a 265 is the sweet spot if you're sticking with a 16" rim. I may lose a little mileage, but they'll look much better. I'm sure other guys will chime in, but this is my opinion and experience.
I want MPG like yours ! Thats why I posted my question. I suspect your tune and EGR delete is helping you out a lot. I'd love to hear others input on the tire size effect.
I've gotten 22 twice. It must have been perfect conditions, but I consistently get 20.5-21.5. I drive like a grandpa and keep it on the 100hp setting unless I'm towing.
I can't get 17 on stock tires. I have 285s on one and get 19 from VA to OK 1300 MI doing 75mph for all but about 200 mi. where I do 65. Pulling a trailer and grossing 19K I get 9.7 to Co. and Back. I have a tuner and set it on 3 and pull with factory setting.
I average 13.3 on 18 inch rims running 275's. If I reset the MPH and head out on the interstate I get around 18mpg. this is unloaded and a completely stock LBZ with 236k on it.
Truck and tires in my sig and I get about 13.5-14.0 on the eco/tow tune with my superchips .
