I have an 08 CCSB. Lately, I have a few cranks-no starts. I would pop the hood, prime it, let the air out, prime again and then it would start. Other times it would start, and after a very brief 20 second window (approx.) it would shut off and then I would have to do the whole priming process over again.
One time it was running fine, drove not evena quarter mile and then it went to reduced power with the code for low fuel pressure. I just repeated the priming process and cleared the code and it worked fine the rest of the drive.
Any ideas that I should look into? Also, is it recommended to get a lift pump/maybe a second fuel filter?
I am new to all of this but I had the same issue and replaced the priming pump filter housing and fixed it. This is only for the starting issue. I am having the same 0087 code that I am trying to figure out, but mine only does it under a heavy load. So u might have a few issues.
In winter I have the same problem at times with the fuel system de-priming itself overnight and on really cold days having to prime the system a couple of times before it runs correctly. That happened last winter (7 months ago now) and I don't have problems in summer so I held off on doing the Duramax filter head rebuild kit (Merchant Automotive sells a seal replacement kit). That might fix your problem, and is definitely the cheapest option to start with except with making sure the filter is on snug.
With regards to the extra filter and lift pump you can find a ton of stuff on this forum/diesel place talking about that stuff.
Do yourself a favor and get a lift pump with additional filtration. Clean, filtered fuel pumped to the front of your truck under pressure is one of the best things you can do for your diesel engine. Once you've done that, and replaced your fuel filter head, I'd bet your truck will be much more reliable.
I just saw this. I was only able to see a different thread until they fixed the issue.
How would you go about setting up the fuel system then? I've seen a lot of different threads, but still not too sure on how to do it. Also, do you have any brands that you would recommend above others?
I do need to replace my fuel lines as well as my father in law thought it was a good idea to look under my truck at night while I was in the house. He managed to nick one of the lines so it leaks very very slowly, just to add to the other issues with the fuel system. Any specific type of fuel line that I should look into using?
I am getting a bigger fuel tank (52 gallons I believe it was) and would like to knock it all out at the same time/weekend.
I had the same issue with my truck, I got a OEM one from the local dealer ( rather than trying to save a little and rebuild) and I haven't had an issue since. while I was at it I also bought a billet aluminum bleed screw to replace the junk factory plastic one
I have had a similar issue and can not narrow down symptoms of when it happens. Ill start the truck up and seems to be running fine... as soon as I put it in gear itll shut off, no codes. When I try to recrank it .... nothing at all, seems like there is no fuel flowing. Ill pop the hood and prime but he prime button seems pretty darn firm. Ill go back to restart and with a lil throttle it starts right up. Once it is restarted it drives totally fine with no issues at all. It has happened to me 3 times over the past 5 months. Im frustrated because like I said, I cant narrow down any common factors to attribute to this... pretty frustrating. both times I was initially parked on a up hill slope.... thought it might be fuel pump going out but because it drive totally fine the rest of the time I have no idea...
8+ years on the same fuel filter head....they fail over time, but longevity really dropped off after we were forced to go ULSD. Fortunately, they aren't that expensive and the new unit comes complete with the head, filter, WIF sensor, fuel heater, and harnesses. Install of the new module is easier/quicker than changing just the filter is.
I should hope not. He'd be homeless, and a whole lot worse, if it wasn't for me.
And I read up on a couple of different threads. Any specific brand you recommend? I understand they all have the same functions, but some seem to better than others I'm told.
Bled is at the filter head on the right side near the firewall has a primer pump on top of it. Pump the pump and then release the bled screw to let air out. If it seems tight you may have another issue.
Can't recall where I bought mine from, but Billet(t?) Makes one that just goes forever. One of the few guys I trust to help work on my truck was the one who found it, and has had no problems in the years he's had his.
