I started the egr delete removal/install process today and have allt eh top end done beside the cooler and the downpipe and uppipe. My truck has a diamond eye downpipe installed on it and i was wanting to know what the easiest way you have gotten the band off at the turbo. I removed the glow plug controller and the black bracket it sits in to make more room to get my hand in there as the nut and stud is facing the driver side. Any other suggestions? Is it necassary to drain coolant from the engine before rmoving the hoses on the cooler? And one last question what is the best easiest way to get the top bolts on the upipe? thanks
I will post pictures later of the nastyness inside the egr system.
flex head ratcheting 11mm wrench will be your friend. May need a stubby depending on where the nut on the clamp is located. a Picture would help. I use some fittings i have laying around the shop to plug the coolant lines. I have never drained the coolant doing an egr delete. When i pull the ones from the cooler, i shove a fitting in them and put the clamp back on it. Easiest way to get to the up pipe bolts is through the passenger side wheel well. I use a 24" 1/2" drive flex head ratchet with a 12 point 12mm. the top 2 that you can see are pretty easy. The bottom one is a bit tougher to get to, at this point i use a 2" extension to get on it square, or a deep 12mm will suffice. Spray them with PB blaster or other penetrating lube of your choice. If you should slip off the bolt while breaking it loose, i found taking your socket and using Gorilla Glue brand super glue around the socket, let it sit for about 20-30 minutes and it will come loose.
Thanks for your replys stealth that is a good write up. My only isssue is with the trans dipstick i just cant get it to come out all the way keeps getting jammed on the firewall lip hence why the down pipe wont come out.
Its kinda a pain to get the dip stick out...unfortuanatly taking it out is the easy part. Putting it back is is gonna have you pulling out hairs. Just pull up straight as far as it will go then twist and turn it whichever way it can and eventually it will make its way out of there, dont be afraid to man handle it a little
Update on the install went at it fresh today and aftering talking to scott at sdp. Only thing hanging up the uppie was the vband clamp on the down pipe. I cut off the heat shield on the turbo to make things easier to get to. Didnt even have to mess with the dipstick tube fortunately. Everything else went smooth with the upipe removal. Cut the riser off and welded on a cap and got the uppipe back in along with the downpipe with no problems. Gonna button up the little things tomorrow morning then fire it up and see how it does. The truck has 86k on it and the egr system was nasty blocked up about 40% of the air flow space. Ill post pictures after its all done.
