Mine has 3500 miles and I am dying to change the factory fill. Its already getting black! I tow almost at the max of the rucks rating, thats why I bought it......
In the old days they used EOS on the new cars, but I dont think they can do much with additives on these new trucks withs cats & DPF's.
Can I get rotella in it right now? My dash says I got 60% oil life left, but I want/need this truck to last.
My dpf and kitty is already off, so I plan to use the NON/old spec oil with the better additve package than the new junk with the low levels of ZDDP.
I have seen lotsa muscle car (flat tappet cams) wiped out by the new spec oils without the good additive packages. Apparently roller cams dont need good oil, and catalytic convertors and likely DPF systems don't like the "old" oils.
We buy our rotella in 55 gallon drums for our logging equipment that doesnt have cats.......It is not the new spec oil, it has the old/good additives in it. That what I'd like to run in mine.
Question is .... can I do it right now or should I wait till the dash monitor say to do it?

I just read this on another post in the forum.......If the EGR is dumping soot in the oil, and IF thats why its black already. I will get the EGR block offs installed.
There would be no sense at all in putting synthetic oil in one of these IF the egr is dumping soot in the motor oil......
IS THIS TRUE?
WHY would GM use the engine oil as a "septic tank" for soot?

the oil is okay. you are going to have black oil in a diesel after a thousand miles on the oil change. my oci is every 5000miles and my brother and my dad take there's out to 10000miles."WHY would GM use the engine oil as a "septic tank" for soot?" they dont it is what has to happen if they want to make the tree hugers happy. every diesel engine does it some more then others.

I am going to change mine a LOT, every 3K unless the EGR blockers clean it up some. No extended drain intervals for me. My oil is free for all intents, and we buy Wix filters by the case , so they are nearly free as well.
It blows me away that the EGR dumps soot in the oil.
I'd guess that the egr system also raises EGT's.....

I feel the closed crankcase system is a contributer to dirty oil as well.
Taking fresh air and crankcase oil vapor into the intake is a start of dirty egr flow.
At least the exhaust will be somewhat cleaner.
Doing a PCV re-route and then the intake will be completly fresh air intake burning not the crankcase oil vapors mixed with the not so fresh anymore air intake.
I did a open pcv on my ex 03 Ford 6.0 and left the egr functioning(reason, the engine sounded like it was going to blow up disabled)
Now,the exhaust was a little cleaner, and the oil stayed cleaner, longer.
