Looking to buy new truck

Ok I have been driving Ford for years. Currently F250 V10 w/350000 miles. I have to buy something. Looked at fords and heard nothing but bad, especially the diesel. Can't hardly find V10 anymore. Lots of diesels out there no gas. Drove a couple of 6.0l Chevy's they are ok. Then I drove the Druamax. Very impressed. Went back to ford and drove some 08,07,06,05 all diesel. No comparison with GMC or Chevy. Hands down chevy has more power and response.

Now I read all this about MPG. I know when you buy a truck like this it should not matter to much, but it does. I see some people getting 16+ around town some getting 10-13 that is a big deal. It is just that each one is very inconsistent. Makes me wonder about lots of other things.

Anyone got any suggestions. I am open to all. Am I worried about nothing?

if it were me i would stick to the 7.3L PSD... a proven long lasting engine.. but you wont win any speed contest with them....

if your gonna go withe DMax and an auto trans stick with a 06/07 since they come with the 6speed.....

the biggest factor to MPG is your right foot.... opening up the flow will also improve the MPG along with a good tuner.... intake, exhaust, and a PPE and your set....

-Raul

Edit... didnt notice where this was posted... only way your gonna get good MPG out of those engines is by taking off the DPF... once you do that you can say goodbye to your warranty.... stick with a non DPF unless you want to start seriuosly modding the truck

Welcome to the forum!

Its all in what you want to do with the truck and how you build it. Stock it will get probably 14-15 around town if your easy on the foot and 18-20 on the highway. If you delete the DPF like raul said and get a programmer then you would get better mileage while towing and driving unloaded. One big killer in these trucks are getting bigger tires. I went from 245 stockers to 285 tires and my mileage dropped significantly! Do the mods and you'll get atleast a 2mpg gain. But, agree it doesnt sound like alot but with the fuel prices it makes it a tone. Even if you keep it stock I guarantee you'll be impressed compared to your V10!

I would stick to a diesel weather you buy a dodge, ford or chevy. I had the 6.0l Gas powered chevy and it did ok but no comparison against the Duramax. So I sold it and bought a duramax and never looked back. I seem to get 18 around town and 20 on the freeway and that seems to be pretty average for the Dmax. A couple buddies have the 7.3 Powerstroke and from what I have seen the power and MPG is nothing of the Dmax but then again you can pick a 7.3 up for thousands less the a Duramax. Its all about what fits you. Good Luck!

No your defiantly not reading it wrong.. Theres a reason why the dealerships dont put a MPG on the sale sheet!

Like I said If you know how to drive you can get actually 20+MPG around town. So it depends on how you drive. One time just to try it I drove 6 miles on windy hilly back roads and was gentle on the truck didnt pull out hard at stop signs and the truck read 21.2 MPG. Im sure you will here people getting 12-16 around town. Just depends on how you drive!

Ask the sales man to take one for a test drive. Reset the MPG meter and drive it like normal then see what you get! Id drive about 10 miles to get a decent reading. Also, some people say the DIC MPG reading is off. However, mine was almost 100% dead on!

With the DPF on the truck you will se 14 tops in town for a long time after you get more mileage you will begin to creep up. If remove the DPF you will see a pretty good increase most see around 4 mpg. Let me know if you have any questions i also have a LMM.

Thanks for the reply. What Banks system would you go with. Just an exhaust or the whole thing, programer and all?

as said biggest thing about mileage is your right foot. it can very 5+ MPG just on how you drive. duramaxes driven nice 01-07 cna get 20 very easy. the 07.5 and up with the DPF will not get as good but removing it you can see the same. my dad's 01 get 25mpg highway all the time. still never understood how though, its stock to. my 03 stock got 22 highway, this is with taller narrower tires though also.
