I plug my truck in when its below 40F. Elevated idle will NOT hurt your truck. PLuggin it in is the BEST thing you can do in the winter.
Warm coolant+Warm oil=happy engine

For the elevated idle to work, the outside temp needs be be below 32F and the engine temp needs to be less than 160F. (or a combination close to that) On cold days, I've noticed that just running around town that the engine temp will drop low enough that the elevated idle will activate even if I've been driving for some time. Never had any problem with it, but you may want to watch extended idle times with the DPF.

Don't be so sure about that. Last winter Canadian dealerships were changing hundreds of Allisons that were fried due to elevated idle and an associated part failure.

Do a search and I'm sure you'll find some info.

Personally, I don't run the elevated idle and I see -30C temps. When the block is frozen solid in the frigid winter I don't like the idea of running the engine any quicker than it needs to.

I think a good winter grill cover will do more for you than the elevated idle.

Just my $0.02.

I had a quick look at the posts from last winter. It seems GM addressed the problem for the LMM's so you should be ok.
Still, I don't like it.

Good luck!

I had someone fax me that recall because I was worried. But what happened was, when it got below -30F...with elevated idle on....it would not flow tranny fluid...and that's what was frying the tranny. But unless it gets that cold out, elevated idle is fine to use. I think it all boils down to how long you want to wait for your truck to warm up. And as for plugging it in...I heard that won't even work unless it's like -10 or below....

I"ve pluggin mine in for the last week or so..since night temps were below freezing..it made my coolant temp about 160. but as soon it ran it went down and high idle kicked on. Only when it was in the 20's

Does the idle go up higher when its colder?
