Dexcool

I know the horror stories of Dexcool and GM, but how does it affect the Duramax? Should I get it out?

Dexcool is just as good as any other antifreeze, like others it breaks down, so just flush it every 36 to 40k and you should be just fine. I always try to use what is recommended when we are repairing a vehicle at the shop. but I do give the reminder that it may protect for up to 100k but the ph level is what causes the problem. just buy a bottle of ph testers and test it twice a year, then you'll know when it's starting to cause trouble.

The old design of dexcool we are told was the problem dexcool. Dont worry about it. Its a great synthetic coolant.

I agree that the newer stuff should be fine. Id also consider flushing and replacing it ever 30-40,000 miles.

I would be interested in seeing any evidence of a formulation change. To my knowledge it hasn't changed, but that doesn't mean much. I no longer use it. Its funny that dealers convey it is a synthetic coolant. GM cracks me up sometimes.

So Killerbee, what would you suggest using instead of DexcooL? I had a 97 Blazer and it screwed the radiator all up (plugged). I never put anything other than Dexcool in it and it still got all nasty.

I am not suggesting you do what I do, but I use G-06, an amber colored Hybrid OAT. It restores a lightly silicated formula.

3 drops of red food coloring, and it looks exactly like dexcool for warranty coveting.

Let me say this then Ill ask my next question, G06 isnt a diesel coolant, even though Dorf uses it, they are better coolants for diesels. Now, having owned only one diesel before, 7.3 Powerjoke, I know of several coolants on the market for diesels, are there any GM, or Isuzu, (they still build the Dmax right?), recommends NOT using? I plan on changing to the Rotella red. I really like its additive package.
