Sometimes when I take my shifter from (P)ark to (D)rive or vise versa the transmission seems to make a clapping noise like metal on metal. This doesn't happen all the time, but curious what it could be and if I should be concerned about it.

Look, I am no expert on this transmission. But I did get a shudder in mine under heavy load because I was not in Tow/Haul mode, and it felt like clutch pack slipping... I don't know what you mean by clapping, but this was a da-da-da-da short interval shudder of clutch packs slipping, before I let off and switched on the Tow/Haul mode....
If you have the Edge with Attitude (I have had it, Platinum, on a King Ranch F-350) anyway if you have it and have been running on the high end of things on power, it could be your transmission slipping/ with a shudder you can feel. If it happens with some frequency, and is dependable, I would get it into a transmission Shop right away for them to have a listen....
Clutch packs slipping, can be the final stage before a total failure. Check the oil and see if it is clean and clear, and make sure it does smell burnt... But anyway, this is just a guess... Rule it out...
Otherwise, It could just be a bang of some engine part clearance as the engine torques, as it twists on the mounts, something could be hitting the chassis or something else. If it is not a transmission shudder, Crawl around under and over and you will probably find a minimum clearance somewhere causing a metal to metal banging away rattle... As you put it into drive or out, and the motor flexes on its mounts... Rattle rattle at low RPM, something in the exhaust hitting somewhere. That is the easiest and best thing it could be..
Sounds like that tranny has the clap..........drum roll please
might just be what typically happens when the tranny is under load coming out of park(not parked on a level surface) if thats what it is you have nothing to worry about

Mine does the same thing. Also a little concerned. If I go to neutral first it never does it. Only from drive to park. When I asked the dealer about it he said HUH!! Hope we are talking about the same thing.

That is exactly when it happens!! Thank you for verifying what I was thinking!

What I started doing the other day, and probably should always do, is when I park on anything that is not level I engage the emergency brake before putting it into park. That way when I do put it in park it doesn't drift forward or backward and put a load on the transmission.

Just this week I took my 08 in to check the clapping noise going from drive to park. I took the tranny tech out with me so he could hear the sound. He said the parking paw pin was not quit aligned with the star wheel causing the noise. He was going to check on updates to resolve but felt there was nothing wrong. The tech did tell me that the Allison operates at a very pressures and makes some noise at times.
yeah mine does this too sometimes because with the big wheels and tires even a small incline puts it in alot of stress...try putting on the e-brake before you put it in park then try it that should take the load off the tranny

Here is what I do, and it had totally eliminated the shutter sound. From "Drive" I apply the regular brakes, then shift to "Neutral" then apply the "E-Brake" then shift to park. I only do this procedure on inclines, and works great to totally relive the pressure on the transmission.
