wow, I surprised they dropped it, must be demand wasnt there. I was looking at an 03 with one but the milage was way too high for my blood (still had plenty of power though, seemed like a good motor).

The 6.0 with the new 6 speed transmission is really supposed to be head and shoulders above the setup with the old 4L80/85E. Better fuel mileage by a bunch, and better gearing so it pulls better. Heard great things about them. Obviously it still won't match a diesel, but its a good alternative for those who only occasionally tow, or can't justify the extra arm and leg for the diesel and its added maintenance costs. It'll do most of what a dmax can, just not as easily or as efficiently.

I had a friend in h/s who's dad got a 2500 with the 8.1L Man that thing was a powerhouse! It wouldn't hesitate to swing the back end out on demand Pulled like a champ and drank fuel like it was a full time job. It was a terrible idea IMO to stop putting it in the HD's. I thik you can still get the 8.1L in the medium duty trucks, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

What do you mean paying extra for diesel and its added maintenance costs?

You ever drive one Jesse? Total pile of shit. It wouldn't even pull a 14' Aluminum single axle with a walk behind mower on it without screaming 5500 RPMs. Garbage. Every time I see a 2500HD with the Vortec badge on the hood I laugh hysterically. I hope the new 6.2 is better for GMs sake.

I've driven several of them. Not one with the new 6 speed though. None of them drive like you describe though! We had a 03 ext cab back when I did some roofing during school. Pulled a 24' 8k lb trailer with spray foam equipment in it around pretty decent. It had 4.10 gears which also helped it. We also had a '01 2500 'burb with the 6.0/4L80E, and a 3.73 rear, that we pulled the same trailer with. It also did pretty well for a suburban. Yeah both would scream going up a hill, but on flat ground or small hills they did pretty well. Terrible mileage, but thats to be expected.

And FWIW they still have both of those trucks, ownded them since right arond the time I started there in 06. No problems to date with either, yes I still talk to my boss there every couple months or so when we run into eachother.

Flat ground or small hills are pretty much non-existent in this part of the country.
This was a 2007.5. My cuz had it for about 5 months/12k miles. Then it got driven to florida and traded on a LBZ. I wouldn't wish that motor on anyone that has any work to do. The gasoline cost alone is enough to bankrupt small countries.

See I've read and heard that they do a good bit better than with the 4 speed. I've never heard of one with a 4 speed get over 15mpg, and thats even rare. I guess if you're pulling 10k+ daily, you would buy a diesel in the first place. But for guys who don't pull that kinda weight you don't need a diesel IMO. I guess it's a compromise, better than a half ton but not an all day every day puller. Like a 5/8 ton truck

I think the 2500HDs should only come in a diesel. I don't tow anything and its way more cost effective than a gasser.

chris the new 6.2 has some serious balls...my best friends mom has it in a denali and that SOB fuickin flies....and pulls real good too

but i agree with you the 6.0 has forever been a total and complete shitpile...before i got my dmax i test drove a reg cab 6.0 2500 and it was about as slow as my POS 1990 f-250 hunk of shit.....i honest think it would of been way faster with a 5.3
