DPF Gut Major Fuel Economy Increase Idea:

Alright, credit where credit is due... This is for you Techies:

One of my Customers on my Bushtracker Forum writes in with this idea on the DPF mileage killer:

"that the pressure differential and temperatures are read electrically and their results fed to the computer. Is it not possible to read the value of these signals soon after coming out of regen .. then calculate a resistor bridge to give whatever signal you want the computer to 'read'? Then toss the dpf and go to a straight pipe.

Now Friends, this is not so wild of an idea here. One side of the DPF is flanged and bolted, so the front end is a straight cut and flared for refit at a later date? If we can duplicate the signal for a clean DPF, the motor will never know it needs to go into regen, and there will be no codes... Take off the DPF and store it for future use if needed or once a year inspection.... Not much to do, for a 2-3 MPG increase (or more towing)... Hey?

Somebody game to try it... ???

Lone Ranger, lost in Oz....

I would love to try it, but wit hno way to trick the computer from kicking codes. How do we create this false resistor bridge for the comp to read? Surely it can be done as you can make fans come on whenever you want....it's all computers. If there is a way to make it come on, there is a way to make it go off, all in the programming

Look, there may be a point here... If you can read the signal of a clean DPF, maybe it is an easy task to reproduce the signal.... If this is the case then we are talking about a MAJOR fuel economy increase!!! With a straight pipe DPF delete we could be talking about a 5 mpg increase

A Silverado just went across the red center of Oz, with a big fifth wheel on the back, and with the Regen DPF setup got 6-8 mpg???? When he should have gotten more like 12-14 at least??? On towing a big rig, the engine is working more and dumps a bit more carbon... This means REGEN more often as well as backpressure... EATS FUEL big time...!

Bloody Greenies are Guilty....:tease

Valid point but needs to be overthought

Guys,

it is interesting to see you guys' ideas, but if you give the engine software the datas of clean filter, your soot along with other particulate matters is going to accumulate on the DPF, which will actually cause higher pressure drop and thus more fuel consumption, rather than decreasing the consumption.
Other disadvantage is that you will have huge differences in local velocity of the exaust gas inside the filter and this can create too much of local pressure and thus cracking of the filter. If that happens you will have black smoke coming out like in the old days...

The ideal solution is to use a DPF which has a catalyst coating, that will bring down the needed regen temp. and thus higher mileage.

Even if this is done I beleive the computer automatically does a regen. even if the filter is not plugged every 1000Km anyways. Still a great Idea to try. I've been giving it alot of thought myself. I figure you could replace the DPF and Cat with a strait pipe and run the DPF sensors (Whitch are just Presure sensors) Pipe one in at the front of the exaust and one in at the rear somewhere. I beleave it would give you enough of a diferance to fool the computer that the DPF is still there but not plugged? Anyone ever tryed this? Any Thoughts??? It would still do the Regen but less often and the lower back presure should give way beter milage??? Anyone, Anyone??? I think it might work??

Why not just buy an S2 and a FloPro delete pipe and call it a day? Gets the job done and is easy to switch back for testing.

you can get a quad tuner with dfp delete and an exhaust for under 800 IIRC.

i wouldn't mess with that stuff

This would be interesting for someone to try. It'd be the way to go for those of us not comfortable voiding our power train warranty. Who cares about the exhaust/emisssions warranty.

its still gonna void your powertrain warranty...ecm logs regen events.. if the miles driven and the regens dont match then...poof there goes your warranty

though the whole thing is a neat idea its pretty much useless
