Took my NEW truck in today for this gosh awful smell that was coming from it. It only did it once, with about 130 miles on the clock, and hasnt done it since. He said he didnt smell anything other than a new truck. Couldnt find where anything had been leaking. I have an appointment with another dealer who has better techs Friday. Unfortunatly the dealer I bought it from doesnt have a full time diesel specialists, so Im having to go elsewhere. Really makes me wonder how they are still in business.

Most likely the DPF and the truck going into regen. Was it a sour eye watering smell?

I never saw a truck go into Regen mode but its possible!
I remember when I first bought my truck it would small weird when it got hot. IIRC the oils and coatings where burning off the motor and exhaust

Yes, smelled kinda like brakes, but more oily. My brother was driving it on a "test drive". I just kinda thought at first maybe he was riding the brake a little long, then once I left there and got home, about 9 miles, I could still smell it, but nowhere near as strong. I guess it could have been some shippig oils burning off, but the truck had 85 miles on it when I test drove it, I fiqured it would have burned off by now, or I would have smelled something while it was running during the OnStar sales pitch.

somtiimes its the paper tags on the exhaust burning off and any grease or oil that burned off. sometimes it takes a couple time off long drives to get rid of the smells. also could be undercoat or rustproofing burning off.
Have to agree with Duramax rob. When I drove mine for the first week or so I smelt burning. I was putting on my running boards the next week and saw the reminace of a sticker on the DBF and Muffler.
I wouldn't worry about unless it last for more than the first 1000 miles.

More than likely it was regen. Smells real strong the first time....the exhaust gets extremely fu%$ing HOT. So any stickers, oils, etc. , will turn to ash on the outside. Don't worry....
