Mine Is An 04 Lb7 And After I Intalled My Silverline 4 Inch I Have The Same Growl At Idle, It Comes And Goes, But If You Put You Foot On The Exhaust Tip It Will Quit, Which Leads Me To Think The Tranny Crossmenmer Idea Just My .02

Here's the old pics I have of how I bent the mounts for the exhaust. Im 99% sure thats your noise. Mine did it all the time. Thers one next to the rear of the trans that can be bent with a pry bar but theres another one thats a pain I used a rack and a "hootie" pole. You could also use a floor jack as well.

This is the mount by the trans. You can see at the bottom right of the picture how close the exhaust and cross member are.

Bent this mount up as well to give the exhaut more room. Its near the rear of the cab.

If its the turbo vanes switching position (go from hissing to rumbling or vise versa) then its completley normal. I don't know exactly why it does it, but its all controlled by the computer. I know that in cold weather it will close the vanes to try and put more backpressure on the motor to warm it up faster, thats one function of it.

Well, you guys were right again! The sound was the exaust rubbing.. It seems odd that a growling noise would come from a metal to metal rattle.. Anyway thanks again to all who replied.

Awesome! Glad you figured it out! I scratched my head when mine was making noise to find out what it was and how to fix it.

I'm glad some one has explained the change in sounds while idling. From what's been said, will it do this more in the winter time trying to warm it up faster??? Mine seems to only do this when first cranking it up. Whatevr the case it sounds cool to me!! Also it sounds very wild between 2400-3000 rpm's when I'm really getting on it. Didn't expect that!

Try hooking the exhaust back up and bend that bracket and the bracket on the trans cross member up with a pry bar. IIRC the bracket on the cross member is real flimsy. So from removing the rear hanger you put more weight on the front hanger and it probably bent down over time.

Ya it will do it more in the winter. If you let the truck sit for a minute the truck will go into high idle and the veins will open and close. IMO the sound is cool to! I have went outside to start my truck in my shorts and waited in my drive way shivering to hear the high idle kick in
