I am trying to get smart (quickly) on the LML fuel system. As we were heading up the I35E highway 50 miles shy of Dallas, towing our 5er, the truck start making knocking noises, lost power and we coasted to the side, but could not start the truck again. The shop won't really be able to dig into the problem until Monday, but here are a few salient points:
1) My fuel filter life remaining went to 0%. It had been roughly 50%. I had the P0087 code at the same time.
2) Thinking I had perhaps gotten bad fuel, I transferred a bunch from my auxiliary tank to the main tank (not the same source), reset the fuel filter (which cleared the P0087 code, but P128E remained) and tried starting again. No luck.
3) The shop used a little ether in the air manifold to get the truck to start briefly. The knocking returned. He also had a reader on it, and said he was seeing fuel pressure of about 1K psi, but I'm not sure where exactly that was measured.
The guy in the shop seemed to indicate there is an auxiliary fuel pump and the main fuel pump (is the main the same as the CP4 injector fuel pump?) but that they would start my looking closer at the aux pump.
I saw the fuel system diagram in the attached link but I'm wondering if someone has a more thorough diagram.

Are there electric control systems I should consider? Any relay/fuse that might die and cause this to happen?
Any help understanding the fuel system would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
